$70 million makeover returns landmark Bangkok hotel to pinnacle of luxury

When a Peninsula hotel opened across the road from the green expanse of the elite Royal Bangkok Sports Club in 1983, it ushered in a new era of luxury for the Thai capital. The city was not short on grand hotels. The Oriental was already a legend on the Chao Phraya River, the Siam InterContinental had brought international-chain glamour to Bangkok in the 1960s, and the Dusit Thani, opened in 1970, had become a striking symbol of modern Thai hospitality.

But the Hong Kong-owned Peninsula occupied rarefied territory in the hospitality world. Bangkok was only the third city in the world to get one, after Hong Kong and Manila, with the brand choosing its locations carefully and creating hotels intended to become landmarks.

Designed by acclaimed hotel architect George Wimberley, the Bangkok Peninsula was indeed in an excellent position, and it had the grand proportions that were Peninsula’s trademark, including an imposing lobby that took its cues from its famous Hong Kong sister, with soaring ceilings and a sweeping staircase. Rooms were unusually generous, while teak, silk, Thai art, garden courtyards and lotus ponds created a distinctly local sense of place.

Its tenure was brief, however. A change in ownership saw it become The Regent Bangkok in 1985. Four Seasons took over management in 1994 and renamed it Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok in 2003; in 2015 it became Anantara Siam Bangkok, joining the Thai-born luxury brand’s existing riverside resort.

(The Peninsula name, meanwhile, returned to the city in 1998, this time on the Chao Phraya, where it remains today.) Now, 43 years after that original Peninsula opened its doors, its successor is beginning another life.

Anantara has completed a $US50 million ($70 million) transformation of the storied property, reimagining all 335 guest rooms, suites and villas, along with its spa, fitness facilities and event spaces. However, the bones that came with its Peninsula pedigree remain, including the amazing lobby with its 100-metre hand-painted mural by celebrated Thai artist Paiboon Suwannakudt and 19 ceiling panels depicting the “Heavens in Thai Thought”.

Rooms have been thoroughly brought into the 21st century, with teak, silk and Thai craftsmanship incorporated into contemporary interiors and bathrooms rebuilt in marble. New garden pool suites and villas bring private pools into the hotel’s tropical gardens, while the two-bedroom Jim Thompson Explorer Suite, created in partnership with the famous Thai silk house, takes its inspiration from a Thai summer home.

What was once simply grand has also become increasingly unusual. Bangkok’s newest luxury hotels tend towards towers; Anantara Siam remains comparatively low-rise, wrapped around mature gardens and courtyards in the heart of one of Asia’s most densely developed cities. And its rooms and public spaces have dimensions rarely found in newer city hotels.

Meanwhile, Bangkok is in the midst of another burst of hotel ambition, with thousands of new rooms scheduled to open over the next few years and much of the development concentrated at the upscale and luxury end of the market.

Some of the world’s biggest hotel names have arrived, or are arriving in Thailand for the first time. Others are raising their bets on Bangkok. Aman Nai Lert Bangkok opened in 2025 in another of the city’s green enclaves. With just 52 suites, starting at an enormous 94 square metres, and a three-storey, 1500-square-metre wellness centre, it pushed Bangkok further into the international ultra-luxury market.

The Ritz-Carlton Bangkok debuted in 2025 at the vast One Bangkok development overlooking Lumpini Park, followed by Andaz One Bangkok in late 2025. Fairmont made its Thai debut with Fairmont Bangkok Sukhumvit in 2026.

On the river, Capella Bangkok and the Four Seasons Bangkok at Chao Phraya River have already helped establish a new generation of resort-like urban hotels. Next comes The Langham, Custom House, Bangkok, transforming the city’s handsome 1888 former Custom House on the banks of the Chao Phraya. For travellers, though, it’s not just the size of Bangkok’s hotel pipeline that matters. It’s what all this competition means when it comes time to book a room.

Bangkok has long been one of the world’s great cities for affordable luxury. Five-star hotels that would require a serious splurge in London, New York, Singapore or Sydney have traditionally been available here at considerably more approachable prices. That’s still true, but the market is changing. At the very top, Bangkok now has hotels playing unapologetically in the global ultra-luxury league, with rates to match.

Look below that stratospheric level, however, and Bangkok’s extraordinary depth of good hotels remains. Established five-stars now find themselves competing not only with one another but with a procession of glamorous newcomers, giving travellers a breadth of choice that’s difficult to match in many other major cities.

But for Anantara, in 2026, even though it is surrounded by spectacular new hotels reaching ever higher into the skyline, all that space, greenery and history it affords makes it feel like the pinnacle of Bangkok luxury all over again.
