American actress and singer Selena Gomez has a message for anyone tempted to try vaping: think twice. The singer and actor has revealed that her history of nicotine vaping has changed her voice, describing the habit as difficult to quit and warning fans that it is not worth the consequences.
In a video shared on her Instagram Stories on Sunday, Gomez spoke candidly about her experience and said she had stopped vaping. Her comments come as the Only Murders in the Building star addresses questions about changes in her voice.
“I’m not gonna be able to change my voice. I vaped nicotine a lot,” the 34-year-old said in the video. She went on to warn people who already vape, as well as those considering starting the habit. “Nicotine is so hard to quit and I think I just wanted to say, if you're going through it or if you're even trying to vape, it's just not worth it. It's so stupid and it's changed my voice,” she said.
Gomez also spoke about the difficulty of giving up nicotine, while expressing hope that she would be able to continue staying away from it.
“I’m really excited because I stopped and I just hope we can keep it up,” she said. “It’s really hard but I know if you are going through something, you can get through it too. It sucks.”
Her admission is particularly notable because she has previously faced questions about changes in her voice. During an Instagram Live session in December 2025, Gomez addressed the subject without attributing it to vaping, saying that her throat sometimes swelled internally.
Vaping is often perceived as less harmful than smoking traditional cigarettes, but nicotine-containing e-cigarettes are not risk-free. The aerosol produced by these devices can contain nicotine and other potentially harmful substances. People who vape have reported symptoms including throat dryness, coughing, irritation and changes in vocal quality.
Nicotine is also addictive, which can make stopping difficult even when a person wants to quit. Gomez acknowledged this challenge in her video, offering encouragement to others trying to break the habit.
