BBL 2026-27 opener: Melbourne Renegades to face Perth Scorchers in historic Chennai game
The Big Bash League is widely considered one of the most successful franchise leagues in the world, behind only the Indian Premier League. For its 16th season, the Australian T20 competition will start outside Australia for the first time. It will open its campaign in India.
The opening match will see Melbourne Renegades take on Perth Scorchers on Saturday, December 12. It will be played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, also known as Chepauk. Play will start at 2:40 p.m. IST, and the gates will open at 12:40 p.m.
It will be the first time an overseas T20 league match will be held in India. Cricket Australia asked the BCCI to host the opener in Chennai, the home of five-time IPL champions Chennai Super Kings, and the board agreed. The game counts as a Renegades home fixture.
Perth Scorchers arrive as the reigning champions after winning a record sixth title. The 44-match season runs from December 12 to January 26. In India, JioStar will broadcast the match, while Seven Network and Fox Cricket will show it in Australia.

Demand has been strong. Around 2,000 tickets were sold in the first 30 minutes, which led to the release of more tickets. More than 5,000 have now been sold, and Cricket Australia is targeting a sellout at a stadium that seats about 35,000.
Alistair Dobson, the general manager of the BBL and the WBBL at Cricket Australia, said the response had exceeded expectations. He said, "We know the BBL is already really popular in India. I think we were really optimistic when we put tickets on sale that that would translate into some sales, but it’s certainly exceeded our expectations."

The Cricket News Opinion: Early sales point to a packed Chepauk for the BBL opener
Early sales suggest the Chennai opener could be close to a full house. Around 2,000 tickets went in the first 30 minutes, and more than 5,000 have been sold since. Fans who want a seat should book as soon as the next batch becomes available.
Weather is the other factor. Chennai receives heavy rain between October and December, and the match falls near the end of that season. The organisers have not set aside a reserve day, but the 2:40 p.m. start gives them the flexibility to extend play if needed.
For Cricket Australia, a strong turnout in India's biggest cricket market would back its plan to grow the BBL as a global league. Dobson has said Indian fans want to experience the colour, noise and music of a BBL game in person, and a full Chepauk would show that.
