29 years after his death, Zambia and Mighty Mufulira Wanderers legend Ashios Jordan Melu has been honoured posthumously for his outstanding contribution to sport and raising Zambia’s profile internationally.
Melu was honoured by President Hakainde Hichilema at the Investiture Ceremony on the occasion of the 62nd Independence Anniversary at State House.
He was recognised alongside boxer Patrick Chinyemba and Copper Princesses head coach Carol Kanyemba.
Melu captained Zambia from 1988 to 1992. In 1992 he turned to coaching as assistant coach at Wanderers before taking over as head coach.
In 1994, he was named Zambia national team assistant coach to Roald Poulsen. He then led Wanderers to back-to-back league championships in 1995 and 1996, giving the club its first league success since 1978.
Melu died in 1997.
Chinyemba was recognised for his achievements in amateur boxing and representation at major international competitions, including the Paris Olympic Games. Born on January 3, 2001, in Lusaka, he has won several senior national titles and competed in IBA and World Championship events.
Kanyemba, who leads the Under-17 women’s national team, the Copper Princesses, was honoured for her contribution to youth development and women’s football. Born on January 23, 1988, in Kateete, she has guided the team through regional and international competitions including FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup qualifiers.
Meanwhile, National Olympic Committee of Zambia President Alfred Foloko congratulated the trio, saying their achievements show talent, resilience and commitment that help raise Zambia’s profile internationally.
“We especially appreciate the focus on youth development, women’s football, and the lasting legacy of Zambian football. We also extend our sincere appreciation to President Hichilema for recognising and celebrating these sports personalities,” Foloko said.
