When do we stop calling women’s sports potential and start valuing the performance? The distinction matters because our language can shape where money goes. Potential asks us to imagine a future return, and performance gives us evidence to evaluate today. The women’s sports economy has both, and investment decisions should reflect where each business stands.
Deloitte projects global women’s elite sports revenue will reach at least $3 billion in 2026, up from $2.4 billion in 2025. Those figures cover commercial, broadcast, and matchday revenue. There is an existing business generating real money, with room to grow.
But basketball, soccer, and volleyball are not interchangeable investment propositions. Different leagues have different histories, resources, and commercial models. Recognizing performance means examining those differences rather than treating women’s sports as one market waiting for its breakthrough. It also means confronting a circular problem: investors want proof of demand, while emerging leagues need investment to reach customers and demonstrate that demand.
We need to fund the conditions that allow performance to develop. A league needs places to play, games people can find, marketing that reaches prospective fans, and an operation capable of delivering a consistent experience. Asking for mature business results before funding those foundations can keep an emerging business permanently emerging.
Volleyball illustrates both the opportunity and the difficulty. In November 2024, League One Volleyball announced $100 million in committed new funding ahead of its January 2025 professional launch. Its model connects youth clubs with a professional league, creating a pathway for athletes and a community from which to build fandom. That investment helped make the professional product possible. It was a commitment to building the business before a professional season could supply the results.
Yet growth across a sport does not guarantee every model will work. In July 2026, Athletes Unlimited announced it would pause its volleyball competition for the season while reimagining the property’s future. The announcement does not establish a lack of demand for volleyball, but it does underscore how much work remains to turn athletic excellence and fan interest into sustainable professional opportunities.
Early capital should come with clear milestones: audience growth, repeat attendance, partner renewals, revenue, and a credible path toward sustainable economics. Investors can fund a defined stage of development, assess what it delivers, and use those results to guide the next commitment. That is how we should evaluate an emerging business in any industry. And, we should also ask whether the resources provided were sufficient to test the proposition fairly.
Once attention arrives, the next task is turning it into a lasting relationship. A fan may come for one athlete, then connect with teammates, rivalries, and the league itself. Athlete storytelling can deepen that connection by showing how players train, lead, and navigate setbacks.
The commercial question is whether that engagement produces repeat viewing, ticket purchases, and spending. A record crowd is valuable, and knowing how many people return makes it more useful for business decisions.
Brands have a role in that process. Deloitte expects commercial revenue, including partnerships and merchandise, to represent approximately 45% of global women’s elite sports revenue in 2026. Partnerships need clear objectives, meaningful activation, and measurement. Evidence of results should inform renewals and strengthen a league’s negotiating position.
As the business grows, we must also examine who shares in the value. Unrivaled, the basketball league founded by Napheesa Collier and Breanna Stewart, announced an August funding round at a $650 million valuation. According to the league, its player equity pool was valued at nearly $200 million, with players remaining its largest shareholder group.
That is a reported equity valuation, not cash paid to athletes. Its eventual worth depends on business performance and investment terms. But the structure deliberately connects the athletes creating the product with ownership of the enterprise. The question extends to authority: who controls budgets, negotiates agreements, and sets strategy? Visibility creates opportunities, while decision-making rights determine how much power comes with them.
Women’s sports deserve financial rigor: revenue is not profit, and a rising valuation is not cash flow. They also deserve investment appropriate to their stage of development and recognition of results already delivered. Where performance is measurable, investment, compensation, and decision-making power should reflect it. Where a business is emerging, we need to fund a fair test of what it can become. That is how breakout attention becomes a lasting sports economy.
