It is back to the drawing board for Deshaun Watson and the Cleveland Browns. They have officially cooled off after a three-game winning streak, as Cleveland suffered a 17-12 loss at the hands of the New York Jets on Sunday at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
Cleveland was clinging to a two-point lead with under seven minutes left to go in the fourth quarter before the Jets surged ahead with a rushing touchdown from running back Braelon Allen. Cleveland still got the ball back two more times after Allen’s score, but those ended up in a punt and a fumble, as New York held on to a close victory — the Jets’ first at home in the 2026 NFL regular season.
Watson Reveals Message to His Teammates After Week 5 Loss to The Jets
Among the issues Cleveland had to deal with in the Jets game were self-inflicted, including dropped passes. Watson, however, isn’t taking it hard on his teammates.
“Just encouraging, just keep encouraging. We have a young team, especially offensively, but keep encouraging them. ‘Don’t get discouraged. I’m gonna keep trying you. I’m gonna keep coming back to you, find the open zones,'” Watson told reporters in the postgame press conference, via Camryn Justice of News 5 Cleveland
“And it’s my job to put the ball with the opportunity for them to make the plays and there were some throws that I probably could have made better also, sitting here thinking about it,” added Watson, who has started under center in all five Browns games so far this season.
“So we’re all in it together and we’re just gonna continue to just keep working hard to find ways to capitalize next time on those opportunities if those elements show up again.”
Watson finished the game with only 155 passing yards and a touchdown on 15/33 pass completions. He was also sacked a total of eight times for a loss of 53 yards.
Cleveland drops to 3-2 and will next face the Baltimore Ravens at home in Week 6.
