The Kano State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, has urged graduating police cadets to embrace intelligence gathering, modern technology and respect for human rights, stressing that effective policing goes beyond the use of force.
This was contained in a statement issued on Thursday by State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, following a lecture delivered by Bakori to graduating Cadet Assistant Superintendents of Police, Course 8, at the Nigeria Police Academy, Wudil, Kano State.
The commissioner said modern policing requires officers who understand democratic principles, strategic communication and the importance of building public confidence in law enforcement.
According to him, police officers must combine courage with professionalism, discipline and integrity to discharge their responsibilities effectively.
Drawing on his 30 years of experience in the Nigeria Police Force, Bakori explained that policing had continued to evolve, making it necessary for officers to acquire new skills and adapt to emerging security challenges.
He urged the graduating cadets to avoid abusing their authority, respect citizens’ rights and remain accountable in the discharge of their duties.
The commissioner also stressed the importance of intelligence-led policing and community participation in tackling criminal activities.
Bakori said the command had strengthened partnerships with traditional institutions, the Police Community Relations Committee and neighbouring police commands to improve security across the state.
He further encouraged the cadets to pursue continuous education and professional development, noting that knowledge remained essential for effective leadership in modern policing.
On discipline, the commissioner advised the officers to obey lawful orders, exercise restraint in the use of power and maintain high standards of conduct.
He reminded them that public respect must be earned through professionalism, hard work and good character rather than rank.
