Enzo Maresca says he knows exactly how good Phil Foden is, before his hat-trick in our 5-1 UEFA Champions League victory over AEK Athens.
AEK Athens display massive for my confidence, says Lewis
The City forward followed his goal in the win over Ipswich Town with a superb treble as we picked up our second win in Europe this season.
It’s been a fabulous return to form after missing a month’s work of action after picking up a red card and three-game suspension in our victory over Manchester United in Old Trafford.
Asked if he had returned with an extra fire in his belly, Maresca said the Academy graduate was showing his quality long before the unfortunate ban.
“I was very happy with Phil, even before the red card to be honest,” the Italian said in his postmatch news conference.
“I said since day one I consider him one of the best English players.
“I know how good he is and we are just trying to help him because I’m sure he will help us.
“We know Phil is a top player. For different reasons he had some problems in the last two years but I know he is going to help us and how good he is. That’s why I’m keen to have him in the best way.”
The pick of his goals was his second, started with a brilliant long pass from Rayan Cherki to pick out Rico Lewis who laid the ball back for Foden to smack home.
Cherki also scored a superb goal himself with a dummy that was followed by a perfect low finish.
“I think Rayan like the others, had a good game,” Maresca said. “He made an impact in some moments like the goal.
“We know we can expect anything from Rayan at any moment.”
Asked if he was a potential Ballon d’Or winner of the future, the boss added: “I don’t know, the only thing I can say, this is a team sport not a single sport.
“Erling [Haaland] is a top player, so is Rayan and Elliot. We have to think about the 20/25 players that are in the squad.”
