Shoprite, Africa’s largest grocery retailer, and Investec, a South African bank, are said to be discussing a fintech partnership, according to a Bloomberg report carried by News24 on Friday 23 October 2026. The talks are preliminary, and neither company has confirmed them.
What Has Been Reported
The report says the two companies are in private discussions about a tie-up in financial technology, the use of software to offer banking-style services. It cites people familiar with the matter, and the structure has not been agreed.
Shoprite declined to comment on the reported talks and said information about business partnerships would be released to the market when appropriate. Investec said it does not comment on speculation.
Why Shoprite Would Want It
Shoprite runs supermarkets across South Africa, and every till is a chance to offer a money service. A partnership would let a retailer offer such services through a bank, rather than becoming a bank itself.
In August 2026, Shoprite took a 51% stake in R&A Cellular, a Mpumalanga firm that provides payment and point-of-sale services to informal retailers. The deal took effect on 14 August, according to Bizcommunity.
The Companies
BusinessDay reported on 12 October that Shoprite’s market value was closing in on R200 billion, which is about US$12 billion at 16.58 rand per dollar (RT market data, 23 October). The shares trade in Johannesburg.
Investec is a South African banking and wealth group, and the reports say it could bring regulatory and technology experience. These roles are the reports’ description, not terms agreed between the companies.
What It Means for US Readers
For US readers, this is a story about Africa’s biggest grocer, valued at about US$12 billion, looking at financial services through a bank partner. It is unconfirmed, and no deal terms exist.
Investors in African retail and banking will watch whether a formal announcement follows. Until then, the report is best read as a sign of direction, not a deal.
What Is Not Known
No transaction value, ownership split, launch date or product has been reported. It is also not known whether the structure would be a joint venture, a service agreement or something else.
We found no public statement from either company confirming talks. We also found no reaction from South African regulators.
