A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dele Momodu, has faulted the emphasis on physical stamina in the search for Nigeria’s next president, insisting that effective leadership requires vision, experience and the ability to manage people and resources.
Momodu made the remarks on Thursday during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, while responding to comments by Oyo State Governor and Allied Peoples Movement (APM) presidential candidate, Seyi Makinde, on the importance of energy and stamina in a presidential candidate.
Makinde had challenged rival contenders ahead of the 2027 general election to demonstrate their physical fitness after jumping off a stage at a campaign gathering in Akure, Ondo State.
Reacting to the development, Momodu argued that the responsibilities of a president go beyond physical strength or athletic ability, stressing that the country’s next leader must possess the intellectual capacity and experience required to govern effectively.
“The job of a president is not to be a high jumper or long jumper. It is to think; it is to have clear vision; it is to have experience; it is to have exposure and be tolerant. Leadership is about managing people and resources,” he said.

The media entrepreneur maintained that Nigeria needs a president capable of making sound decisions, setting clear priorities and managing the country’s human and material resources rather than someone whose physical energy is the primary selling point.
