The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) announced a sweeping law enforcement crackdown against North Korea’s remote information technology (IT) worker schemes on Tuesday, charging over a dozen people with helping the workers obtain fraudulent employment at American companies.
The crackdown resulted in charges against 14 people, two arrests and the seizure of 187 computer devices, according to a DOJ press release.
The actions targeted a network accused of helping North Korean IT workers use stolen or fabricated identities to secure remote jobs, with earnings funneled to entities controlled by Pyongyang to support its weapons programs, the DOJ said.
