Portuguese media have warned José Mourinho not to underestimate PSV Eindhoven after Peter Bosz’s side produced an impressive performance to defeat FC Porto 1-0 in the Champions League, with one journalist suggesting the Dutch champions could even surprise Real Madrid.

PSV controlled large portions of Tuesday’s contest at the Estádio do Dragão, with Guus Til scoring the decisive goal. Their aggressive pressing, intensity and ability to dictate the tempo left a strong impression in Portugal, where Porto struggled to impose themselves on home soil.

The performance also caught the attention of Portuguese football observers familiar with PSV, with one club journalist drawing comparisons between the challenge Bosz’s team could pose to Porto and their upcoming European opponents.

Porto Players Knew What To Expect From PSV

Several members of Francesco Farioli’s squad were already familiar with PSV’s playing style before the match.

Pablo Rosario, Santiago Giménez and Inbeom Hwang had previous experience of facing the Eindhoven club, meaning the visitors’ aggressive approach should not have come as a complete surprise.

Hwang acknowledged that Porto knew the quality PSV possessed, but admitted that his team had failed to make the most of their opportunities.

“We all knew that they had a good team, especially Santiago Giménez and me, because we had already faced them several times in the Netherlands,” Hwang said after the match.

“We also got chances, but we didn't score and they did. That's how it is in the Champions League. We still have five matches ahead of us. We'll go all out and I believe we can do much better.”

Rosario had also reportedly shared information about PSV with his coach before the encounter. However, any familiarity with Bosz’s methods did little to prevent Porto from being dominated for long periods.

The defeat was particularly frustrating for the home supporters. Porto’s players made a lap of honour after the final whistle, but sections of the crowd responded with boos rather than applause, underlining the disappointment surrounding the performance.

Portuguese Journalist Sends Warning To Mourinho

PSV’s display has now prompted a warning for Mourinho ahead of their upcoming Champions League meeting with Real Madrid.

A Portuguese journalist who regularly follows Benfica, Sporting Lisbon and Porto was particularly impressed by the Dutch side’s ability to take control of a match away from home.

“This was a very unpleasant experience for FC Porto. I have never experienced anything like this before, that an opponent is so dominant in its own stadium,” the journalist said.

The assessment went beyond Porto’s disappointing performance, highlighting the qualities that could make PSV dangerous against other elite European teams.

“PSV is a completely different opponent than what FC Porto faces in the League. PSV is able to speed up the ball, is strong in the pressing, aggressive in winning the ball back, and physically on a par.”

The journalist then delivered a clear message about the threat Bosz’s side could pose in Madrid.

“This PSV can also surprise Real Madrid,” he added, as quoted by PSV Inside.

The warning comes as PSV prepare for their remaining Champions League fixtures, with Club Brugge due to visit the Philips Stadion before the Dutch side travel to face Real Madrid on 13 November.

Bosz’s Side Earning Respect Across Europe

The Porto victory has strengthened the impression that PSV can compete with leading European opposition when their pressing and possession-based football work together effectively.

Tommie van der Leegte also suggested after the match that PSV, performing at this level, could beat any opponent. The Portuguese journalist’s comments echo that confidence, particularly after Porto struggled to cope with the visitors’ intensity in their own stadium.

For Mourinho, the assessment serves as a reminder that PSV should not be judged solely by their domestic standing or recent results. Bosz’s team have demonstrated that they can take the initiative against experienced European opposition.

Their next Champions League assignments will provide a clearer indication of how far that performance can carry them. But after leaving Porto with three points and widespread praise, PSV have given their future opponents plenty to consider.
