The government has decided to relocate the Bangladesh Secretariat from Abdul Gani Road in the capital to Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, with a new secretariat complex planned for the former trade fair grounds. Official activities at the new site are scheduled to begin in 2029.
The Cabinet approved the proposal at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at the Secretariat this afternoon (18 October).
Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Gani disclosed the decision at a press conference after the meeting.
The government had earlier taken an in-principle decision to relocate the Secretariat at a meeting chaired by the prime minister. Senior officials from the Ministry of Housing and Public Works, the Public Works Department and the Department of Architecture attended that meeting.
Following the decision, preparations for constructing the new Secretariat and relocating its offices began. As part of the process, the Ministry of Housing and Public Works sent a letter to the Planning Commission the following day, seeking to include the project in the Annual Development Programme (ADP).
