The Detroit Red Wings, in their only US-based game on their four game road trip came away with a point after losing to the Seattle Kraken 4-3 following the shootout. Despite a heroic third period rally, including Alex DeBrincat’s 300th career goal, the Red Wings were ultimately unable to push past Philipp Grubauer and the Seattle Kraken.
Bobby McMann hit the game deciding goal in the fourth frame of the shootout to seal the game, leaving the Red Wings winless against the Kraken for the season.
Raymond getting revved up
The Red Wings found themselves down early in the game, with Mackie Samoskevich, Ryker Evans and Brandon Montour sneaking the puck past Daniil Tarasov before Detroit responded on the scoreboard. Detroit looked sluggish for much of the game, with Seattle dominating play in the Red Wings o-zone for much of the first and second period.
However, as the third period wore on, the Red Wings were able to find some momentum off the back of Viktor Arvidsson and Lucas Raymond scoring two goals in 59 seconds a little over halfway through the period. Arvidsson broke Seattle’s momentum with his first 5v5 goal in a Red Wings uniform to make the score 3-1.
Raymond potted the game winner in Detroit’s shootout win over the San Jose Sharks last Saturday. However, the young winger had gone the first nine games of the season without notching a tally in the goal column on the scoresheet before tonight. The dam looks to have opened though, with Raymond collecting his own rebound and using some slick stick handling moves to deposit the puck in behind Grubauer to bring the Red Wings within one of the Kraken tonight.
Both Arvidsson and Raymond have had somewhat slow starts to their seasons, however, the two wingers managed to spark some life back into the Red Wings tonight, even if the rally ultimately fell short.
Cat has some tricks in the bag
Still, the Red Wings needed a little extra help to force overtime tonight. Facing down the prospect of snapping their four game points-streak, head coach Todd McLellan pulled Tarasov to give Detroit the extra skater late in the third period. The Kraken would only add to their own plight when Chandler Stephenson was put in the penalty box with a little under a minute and a half left in regulation, giving the Red Wings a 6-on-4 situation.
As the clock ticked down in the final minute of the game, the Red Wings turned to their best player, and DeBrincat snapped the puck in on a wrist shot behind Grubauer to tie the game with just 16 seconds left.
He, alongside sophomore center Emmitt Finnie, figured into all three of Detroit’s goals tonight. DeBrincat added to his totals to take the team lead in both goals (6) and assists (5) amongst Red Wings skaters tonight.
