Brussels – The European Parliament has called on the Council of the European Union to designate the Houthi group, in its entirety, including all its factions and leaders, as a terrorist organization, and to freeze its assets and dismantle its funding channels.
This call was based on a proposal by High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kaslas.
The call came in response to escalating threats from the Houthi group The resolution condemned the group's attacks on Saudi Arabia, Yemen, the UAE, and Israel in recent years, as well as its targeting of commercial vessels and energy infrastructure in the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
It warned of the repercussions of disrupting maritime traffic on energy prices and the competitiveness of the European economy.
On the regional and security front, the Parliament condemned Iran's destabilizing role in supplying the Houthi group with weapons and funding. It denounced the coordination between the group, Hezbollah, and other armed factions, and stressed the need to disarm the militias.
The resolution reaffirmed solidarity with Saudi Arabia and the legitimate Yemeni government, calling for enhanced security and defense cooperation between the European Union and its Gulf partners, and for increased support for the EU's maritime defense operation, Operation Aspidis, with additional military assets to protect international shipping.
On the humanitarian front, the Parliament called on the Houthi group to cease all hostilities and abandon its expansionist ambitions, expressing its concern over the deteriorating situation in Yemen.
The resolution also urged the European Union to increase its humanitarian aid to the country through the anticipated Global Europe instrument, while imposing strict oversight to ensure its use for its intended purposes.
