DigitalOcean's Oct 12 launch moves the infrastructure battleground to observability and simulation, betting that the future of agentic trust depends on the feedback loop rather than the runtime.
As agent components become commoditized, the primary challenge for enterprise builders has shifted from simply launching an agent to ensuring that the agent reliably improves over time. This transition marks a move from raw execution to governance and systematic refinement.
On October 12, 2026, DigitalOcean addressed this shift with the announcement of Agent Learning Services and Agent Data Services. By introducing these layers, the company is positioning itself to support the full lifecycle of agentic workflows, moving beyond the infrastructure of compute to the infrastructure of reliability.
The architecture is split into two distinct functional areas. Agent Data Services, currently in private preview, provides the data foundation for agents through Managed Data Flows and a Data Catalog. This layer is designed to ensure that agents have the consistent, high-quality context required for complex tasks. Complementing this is the Agent Learning Services suite, now in public preview, which focuses on the feedback loop. This suite includes Insights, a unified observability platform built on OpenTelemetry; Signals, which monitors production traffic for failures and constraints; and Simulations, which allows developers to test agent changes through multi-turn scenarios grounded in real-world data.
As runtimes become increasingly standardized across major providers, as seen in Google’s consolidation play, the competitive landscape is migrating toward the observability and simulation layers. Enterprises are no longer satisfied with agents that function in isolation; they require systems that provide visibility into why an agent succeeds or fails. This maturity-gap thesis suggests that the providers who can offer the most robust governance tools will ultimately win the trust of enterprise operators.
DigitalOcean CPTO Vinay Kumar noted, “The question has changed from can we launch an agent to does our agent get better with every run.” This “improve loop” is the new battleground for infrastructure providers, mirroring the shift toward platform-level governance. Without a structured way to ingest signals from production and simulate outcomes before deployment, agents remain black boxes that are difficult to scale in high-stakes environments.
Observability is the prerequisite for this level of control. By integrating tools like Signals and Insights, developers can identify frustrated users and failing tools in real-time. This mirrors the evolution of runtime safety layers, where the ability to detect infrastructure constraints and performance bottlenecks became the standard for production-grade applications. For agents, this observability is the only path to achieving the predictability required for enterprise adoption.
By providing a managed environment that bridges the gap between raw data and actionable learning, DigitalOcean is betting that the future of agent infrastructure will be defined by the quality of the feedback loop. For builders, the goal is no longer just to deploy, but to build systems that demonstrate measurable improvement with every execution.
