The Member of Parliament for Tano North, Dr Gideon Boako, has announced plans to introduce free WiFi services across communities in the constituency to improve internet access for students and other residents.
The initiative, to be known as the MP’s Constituency WiFi project, is aimed at helping young people access educational materials online without the financial burden of purchasing internet data.
Dr Boako said the project was part of his commitment to supporting the youth and creating opportunities for them to improve their academic performance.
Explaining the motivation behind the initiative, the MP said his personal experience had taught him the importance of education and the need to make learning resources accessible to young people.
He noted that he wanted to introduce interventions that would make life easier for his constituents, particularly students who depend on the internet for research and other academic activities.
“I want to do what can help you make things easier for you because I know if not for education, I wouldn’t be where I am today,” he said.
Dr Boako expressed concern that many students in the constituency struggled to continue learning during school vacations because they could not afford internet data on their mobile phones.
He explained that the growing dependence on digital resources in education meant that students without reliable internet access risked falling behind their peers.
“One thing I have also noted is that our kids in school, when they come on vacation, they are unable to learn because now education and learning are all on the internet, and the phones the children are using need internet, which must be bought,” he stated.
He added that while some students could afford data to support their studies, others were left at a disadvantage.
The Tano North MP said the proposed free WiFi service would be rolled out in communities across the constituency, allowing residents within the network’s coverage areas to connect without paying for internet access.
According to him, the availability of the service would give students greater opportunities to study during vacation periods, conduct research and access online learning materials.
“By the grace of God, I know we have a lot of communities within the Tano North constituency. I am coming up with the MP’s Constituency WiFi, and everyone within the internet catchment can use it for free without paying anything,” he said.
The initiative is expected to provide additional support for students while expanding access to digital resources for young people and other residents across the constituency.
