Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman was on target as Atletico Madrid defeated Manchester United 2-0 in their UEFA Champions League clash on Tuesday night.
Lookman scored Atletico’s second goal in the 79th minute to seal the victory at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid.
The Nigerian international came off the bench and made an immediate impact, helping Diego Simeone’s men secure all three points against the English Premier League side.
Atletico took the lead just seconds into the match through Pablo Barrios, who capitalised on United’s defensive lapse to put the hosts ahead.
Manchester United attempted to fight back but struggled to convert their chances as Atletico maintained their defensive discipline.
United’s task became more difficult when defender Leny Yoro was sent off following a VAR review for a challenge on Atletico forward Jonathan David, leaving the visitors with 10 men.
Lookman subsequently found the net in the 79th minute after goalkeeper Senne Lammens failed to hold a shot, allowing the Nigerian forward to capitalise on the rebound and double Atletico’s advantage.
The goal capped an impressive contribution from Lookman, who helped the Spanish side secure a comfortable victory in front of their home supporters.
The defeat represents another setback for Manchester United, who were unable to recover after conceding early and later losing a player to a red card.
For Lookman, the goal adds to his growing contribution to Atletico Madrid since joining the Spanish club, further underlining his importance to the team.
Atletico will now turn their attention to their next Champions League fixture as they seek to maintain their momentum in the competition.
