The Naga Political Issue: Beyond Promises, Towards a Shared Future

Peter L YimchungerDepartment of Sociology, St Xavier College, JalukieWhat does political truly mean for the Nagas? Is it merely about electing leaders to represent different groups, or does it encompass a greater responsibility of our people? The Naga political issues is not a new subject of public discourse. Many of us have grown up hearing discussion, debates, and assurances about finding a lasting resolution. Generation after generation, this issue has remained at the forefront of our political consciousness. Yet, despite resolution continue to remain elusive. This raises fundamental questions: Are we genuinely moving towards a solution or have we become accustomed to an endless cycle of waiting? This is one of the most pressing challenges confronting the Naga people today. We have every right to question, examine, and demand accountability from those who claim to represent our interests. For too long, many legitimate questions have remained unasked or unanswered. However, silence cannot remain our permanent response. It is time to move beyond hesitation and critically examine our circumstances. What continues to impede our progress, and what must change for us to move forward?Political leaders frequently speak about development, employment opportunities, economic advancement, and a prosperous future for the people, these are essential aspiration that reflect the hopes and expectations of ordinary citizens. However, when political assurances fail to translate into tangible outcome, public confidence gradually erode, what once inspired optimisms eventually give way to disappointment and disillusionment, People begin to feel that political discourse is dominated by rhetoric rather than meaningful action. We have repeatedly encountered the familiar assurances that development will arrive tomorrow, opportunities will emerge tomorrow, and meaningful transformation will take place tomorrow. But how long must the people continue to bear the burden of perpetual waiting? For many, this promised tomorrow has been postponed for decades. We cannot continue to build our collective future upon unfilled assurances and uncertain expectations. What we need is decisive action is today, not another pledge that everything will improve tomorrow.Another crucial question deserves serious consideration: Are our political leaders and organisations genuinely working towards a Shared Future, or are they becoming increasingly preoccupied with their respective interests? When different groups pursue separate objective without adequate coordination or a common vision, collective progress become increasingly difficult to achieve. Even well-intentioned initiative may produce limited results when cooperation and mutual understanding are absent. We can understand this through a simple yet meaningful example from our villages. The development of a village often depends upon the active participation and cooperation of various organisations, including student bodies, village council and other community institutions. Each organisation has it own responsibilities, functions, and priorities, but all share a common obligation: safeguarding community welfare and promoting the overall advancement of the village. When these organisations operate independently without constructive coordination, development may stagnate, and essential community concerns may remain unresolved. Conversely, when they come together through mutual respect, collective responsibility, and a Shared commitment to common good, meaningful progress become achievable. Cooperation strengthens their collective efforts, while unity provide direction and purpose to their initiatives. The same principle applies to the broader Naga political issue. Political groups, organisations, and leaders may hold differing perspective, approaches, and priorities. Different of option are not inherently detrimental; rather challenge lies in our ability to reconcile these differences through constructive dialogue, mutual respect and will.
