Nico Williams and Liverpool, why confirmed past interest still matters
Liverpool’s recruitment over recent years has been wide-ranging, expensive and, at times, difficult to judge in full while the squad continues to evolve. More than £600 million has gone on arrivals across the last two seasons, with some additions settling quickly and others still being assessed from the outside. Against that backdrop, fresh confirmation that Nico Williams was firmly on Liverpool’s radar in 2024 feels significant, particularly given the club’s long-running search for elite attacking depth.
According to Marca, the Spain international’s representative has set out the scale of interest that surrounded the winger after the European Championship, and Liverpool were among the clubs in the picture. It is not a revelation that Liverpool admired Williams, his profile has long appealed to top-level recruitment departments, but public confirmation from the player’s side gives the story more substance.
Liverpool interest in Nico Williams confirmed
The key detail here is straightforward. Liverpool were in a queue that included several of Europe’s biggest names, all exploring the possibility of signing one of the game’s most explosive wide players. The agent said, “We all know about Barça’s interest in the summer of ’24, after the European Championship,” before adding, “Barça, Arsenal, Bayern, Liverpool, PSG… I could name them all. Everyone wanted Nico, and having a player say no to all these clubs isn’t easy.”

That aligns with the market view at the time. Williams was highly coveted because he offered pace, directness and top-level experience despite his age. He had already shown he could decide major matches, stretch defences and operate in high-pressure environments. Liverpool’s interest made obvious sense given the club’s need to refresh and rebalance its forward line after the celebrated era built around Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino had come to an end.
The comments also provide useful context on why no move materialised. The issue, as laid out by the player’s camp, was not simply admiration from afar, it was the conditions around any potential transfer and the need for sporting clarity. The agent explained, “From then on, we talked to Barça. Athletic knew because I kept them informed about the situation at all times, even though Athletic and Barça, Athletic was angry with Barça for their methods.”
Transfer stance shaped by guarantees
What followed is perhaps the most revealing part. Williams and his camp were focused on one principle above all, certainty over role and continuity. The representative said, “From then on, I initiated conversations, and there came a point in the negotiations, in the situation, where Nico couldn’t be without playing time. Nico is a Formula 1 car, and if I go to your house, I can’t take on your problem, and I made that clear to Barça.”
That line captures the player’s standing and the confidence of those around him. It also speaks to why Liverpool, or any elite club, would need a very clear plan before advancing. Clubs at the top end of the market are not only buying talent, they are managing expectations around status, game time and tactical fit. Williams’ camp were evidently unwilling to compromise on those points.
The explanation continued, “From then on, we decided that if there weren’t certain guarantees, we couldn’t risk Nico not going there to play, with a World Cup coming up, and not just with a World Cup, it’s… A professional has to practice their profession.” He added, “I go to your house to practice my profession; I have to continue doing my profession, and if you have a problem, that shouldn’t affect me. And if you can’t assure me that it won’t affect me, then I might have to change my mind.”
For Liverpool, those words underline how finely balanced these pursuits can be. Admiration alone is never enough. Timing, opportunity and pathway all have to align.
Why Nico Williams suited Liverpool
From a football perspective, the attraction is easy to understand. Williams can play on either flank, attack space at speed and create separation in one-v-one situations, attributes every top side values. Liverpool have invested heavily in attacking talent, including Florian Wirtz, Bradley Barcola and others, while Alexander Isak has also elevated the firepower available. Even so, specialist wing depth with genuine explosiveness remains one of the premium commodities in the market.
Williams may not have produced his very best numbers in the most recent campaign and his current season began steadily, but the broader view remains positive. At 24, he is entering the stage where elite wingers often sharpen their decision-making to match their physical gifts. That is why interest in him has never truly cooled, and why this latest account will inevitably reignite conversation around clubs that previously considered him.
Liverpool did not complete a deal then and moved in other directions. That does not necessarily make it a mistake, but it does leave open the sense of an unfinished line in their recruitment story.
Our View
As a Liverpool supporter, this feels like one of those transfer stories that lingers because the fit is so obvious. Nico Williams has the profile supporters tend to get excited about, quick, direct, brave in possession and capable of playing on either side. When a player like that is confirmed to have been on Liverpool’s shortlist, it is hard not to wonder what might have happened if the club had pushed harder.
There is also a wider point. Liverpool’s spending has been huge, and some of it has clearly improved the side, but fans still want to see a fully coherent attack built for the next cycle. Williams looks like the sort of signing who could have connected several ideas at once, succession planning, tactical flexibility and elite upside. He would not have arrived as a gamble in the usual sense, he would have arrived with pedigree and a game tailor-made for Premier League transitions.
That said, the comments from his agent matter. If guarantees were central, then Liverpool would only have had a chance if they could offer a clear sporting pathway. Perhaps that was not possible at the time. Perhaps it still will not be. Even so, if the market opens again, many supporters would likely welcome Liverpool revisiting a player who still looks capable of becoming one of Europe’s defining wingers.
