Pi Network’s scheduled Mainnet transition has passed, but its price remains below eight cents. The change gives developers new tools; proof of use will take longer to show up.
Summary
- PI traded near $0.0786 on October 23, with roughly $3.1 million in reported 24 hour volume and a market value near $888 million.
- Pi asked Mainnet node operators to move to Protocol 28 by October 13 ahead of an October 16 activation, but its node page still describes the upgrade as in progress.
- October 20’s $0.078992 CoinGecko close was below the October 16 close of $0.080503; those two observations do not isolate an upgrade effect.
- The project says it has more than 300 Mainnet apps and 18.1 million KYC verified users, without publishing comparable transaction and repeat usage figures for the apps.
- Pi’s November 17 to 19 ecosystem summit offers a dated opportunity for developers to show working products, payment activity and what the new protocol has enabled.
PI was changing hands around $0.0786 on October 23, according to crypto.news’ live price page. The token was down about 13% over a month and its reported daily turnover was about $3.1 million. A protocol release had been scheduled for the previous week, yet there has been no sustained price recovery to eight cents. CoinGecko’s historical table puts the October 16 close at $0.080503 and October 20’s at $0.078992. The difference is small in absolute terms, but the direction is enough to challenge the idea that an upgrade by itself brings buyers.
The more consequential question is what changed on the network. Pi told node operators to install version 28 before the October 16 Mainnet transition. The Pi Node page still calls the protocol upgrade “in progress” as of October 23 and directs operators to its instructions. That wording is not a network-wide completion report. A price chart cannot tell whether every relevant node upgraded, which developer features have been used in production, or whether an application has made its first payment because of them. Pi needs separate evidence for each claim.
The scheduled switch and the public record
Pi’s October timetable involved two different dates. October 13 was the deadline for Mainnet node operators to update their software; October 16 was the planned activation. The distinction mattered before the switch and still matters now. A downloaded client does not prove its operator stayed online, and a scheduled activation does not by itself provide a count of upgraded, participating nodes. The team’s public node page remains a useful starting point, but it has not published a participation percentage or a completed incident report there.
Coverage of the node deadline made the same distinction when the October 13 date passed. Subsequent market descriptions have called Protocol 28 active, while Pi’s own general node notice retains the “in progress” language. This article treats the October 16 activation as the announced schedule and the official notice as the limit of what that particular public source confirms. Developers can check the network’s version and executed transactions directly; readers should not have to infer that status from an exchange candle.
The software work is real whether or not the market immediately notices it. Protocol changes can improve what developers are able to build without creating a payment on the first day. A compatible wallet, merchant service or contract also requires testing, distribution and customers. A release that permits safer coordinated changes to contracts addresses a developer problem; its economic effect depends on teams making and using those changes. The relevant timeline therefore extends beyond the operator deadline.
What Protocol 28 could give app developers
Pi has described the release as improving the handling of delayed transaction data and allowing developers to update groups of smart contracts together. Coordinated upgrades can matter when an app has more than one contract that must move to a new version at the same time. Without coordination, a payment component could start using a new interface before the accounting component is ready. Better handling of delayed data matters to applications that must reconcile transactions and state rather than merely show a balance.
Those are capabilities, not published performance results for Pi apps. No public Pi announcement reviewed for this feature gives a measured reduction in failed payments, a median confirmation-time improvement or a count of contracts already migrated using the new facility. The underlying technology’s relationship with Stellar is useful context, but Pi’s rollout and developer adoption must be judged from Pi’s own chain and its applications. A change on another network is not a proxy for production results here.
A developer could demonstrate a coordinated upgrade with contract addresses, transaction records and a before-and-after description of the operation. A commerce app could report successful settlements, failed attempts and repeat purchases over a defined period. Those details would turn a broad “utility” claim into evidence that readers can compare from one month to the next. Until then, the defensible conclusion is narrower: Pi set a new software baseline for nodes and describes additional tools for builders.
The release also changes what a useful developer update should contain. If an app team says it upgraded several contracts together, the public account should name the application, describe the user-facing operation and give a link to the relevant transactions. If the same team says settlement became more reliable, it should state the old and new failure rates on comparable volumes. A percentage without the transaction count can hide a tiny sample; an aggregate count without a failure rate can hide deterioration as traffic grows. Such disclosures would make it possible to judge whether the engineering improvement survived ordinary use.
For users, the change may be almost invisible. They open an app, pay a merchant and receive a receipt. The network underneath must keep balances and application state consistent when software changes or a transaction is delayed. A release that helps builders do that is valuable infrastructure work, even if no trader has reason to change an order on activation day. Calling it a price catalyst before the applications demonstrate those outcomes gives the calendar more weight than the evidence.
PI’s price provides a limited signal
A token price reflects a stream of orders, available supply and the broader market, not a controlled experiment on one software release. CoinGecko’s historical PI table shows the October 16 close near $0.0805, with reported volume of about $6.2 million that day. The October 20 close was just under $0.0790 with volume near $3.45 million. One day of higher turnover around an event says trading took place; it does not show whether buyers were new app users, existing holders rebalancing or short term speculators.
October’s wider slide also predates the activation. PI was closing around $0.0883 on October 3 and $0.0818 on October 9 in CoinGecko’s table. The October price scenarios examined a rally contingent on demand and a weak case near the recorded low. The subsequent path has stayed much closer to the latter region. A current price around $0.0786 is roughly eight tenths of a cent above the $0.070586 all-time low on the live price page. Percentages can make a modest cent movement sound large at such a low unit price, so both the dollar level and liquidity matter.
The live page reports about 11.29 billion PI circulating and a market capitalization of approximately $888 million. Multiplying the quoted price by that circulating figure gives about the same order of magnitude, though both inputs move. A rise of one cent per PI would imply roughly $113 million of additional marked circulating value at that supply, not necessarily $113 million of net exchange purchases. Market capitalization is a mark on the full circulating stock. It cannot identify the marginal buyer or cash raised by the project.
Supply and access sit beside the upgrade
Pi’s maximum supply is listed at 100 billion, while current circulating supply is much smaller. Maximum supply is not a claim that all those coins can be sold today. Migration, lockups, distribution schedules and exchange access decide what amount can reach a market in a given period. The price question is whether demand absorbs the coins that actually become transferable. A developer feature can coexist with net selling pressure if holders gain access faster than customers gain a reason to spend or hold PI.
The distinction between an app audience and liquid supply is often lost. A person can have a Pi account without passing KYC, complete KYC without migrating a balance, migrate without unlocking it, and unlock without selling. Conversely, a small number of liquid holders can account for substantial exchange flow. None of the public headline counts gives a day-by-day bridge from app use to exchange order books. A serious supply analysis needs dated migration and lockup data and must say whether a figure describes total issued, circulating or immediately tradable coins.
PI’s roughly $3 million in reported daily turnover is also a caution about interpreting price targets. Market data aggregate venues and methodologies, and quoted volume is not automatically the depth available at a particular price. Large holders attempting to sell may move the market more than a simple market-cap calculation suggests. A projected price based solely on an upgrade calendar ignores that execution problem.
The reported circulation figures also need a date. The live price page updates frequently, while community posts about migrations or scheduled unlocks may refer to a different snapshot or count tokens that remain locked. Placing those numbers in the same sentence without matching definitions can create a false supply shock. To measure pressure, one would need to know the amount newly available, how much reaches exchanges, and whether sellers actually transact. A transfer into an exchange is an indicator of possible supply, not proof of a completed sale.
Exchange liquidity has a second side: the strength of bids. If a large amount of PI is offered into a shallow book, the execution price can fall well below the last displayed trade. If new app users acquire small balances over many days, their demand may be dispersed and difficult to see in a daily chart. Reported volume alone does not resolve the balance between these flows. Order-book depth and net exchange transfers could help, provided their venue coverage and limitations are disclosed.
An app count still needs a usage count
Pi’s ecosystem summit announcement says more than 300 apps are on Mainnet, while citing over 60 million engaged Pioneers, 18.1 million KYC verified users and more than 420,000 nodes. Each number measures a different thing. An app listing is not a monthly active buyer; an identity check is not a transaction; a node count does not show how many apps settle purchases. Pi did not provide app-by-app monthly activity or total merchant payment value in that announcement.
Our examination of the app claim asked how those listings could be tested against actual use. The practical measure is repeat behavior over a fixed period, with a clear definition of what qualifies as an active user. For a payment app, settled purchase value and the number of distinct payers and merchants would be more revealing than downloads. For a game, retained players and actual in-game transactions would answer a different question. A count of projects entering Mainnet says development is underway; it cannot stand in for those outcomes.
The November 17 to 19 online summit could provide a useful checkpoint if teams show contract addresses, payment flows and users returning after the first visit. Product demos alone can establish that a feature works, but the economic claim needs transactions at scale and a reason those transactions use PI. The event’s timing gives readers a way to revisit today’s promise in less than a month.

The team says a stablecoin could help where price stability is needed, but adoption would depend on careful design that fits Pi’s ecosystem and principles rather than simply adding another token. pic.twitter.com/U45ZWieTBI
Stablecoins complicate the demand story
Pi has said PI will remain the ecosystem’s primary cryptocurrency while stablecoins could support selected payment activities. Its stablecoin approach and exploratory work with the OUSD issuer do not establish that a Pi-based stablecoin is live or that its use would mechanically raise PI demand. A dollar token can make a merchant’s price easier to quote and remove some short term volatility from a sale. The choice of settlement asset, fees and any required PI balance will decide how much that activity reaches PI itself.

The partnership with Open Standard could bring stablecoin payments and Pioneer rewards to the $PI ecosystem, while keeping Pi as the network’s native token. pic.twitter.com/AmbmCn578A
The distinction cuts both ways. If a stable payment rail brings people into apps, PI may benefit indirectly if the network uses it for fees, rewards or other functions. If most commerce can take place without acquiring PI, app growth might be visible without a proportional token bid. The answer lies in the final product design and transactions, neither of which follows from a partnership announcement. Recent coverage of the stablecoin plan correctly separated exploration from a launch.
Investors should also distinguish payments from exchange activity. A wallet transfer among existing holders, a purchase by a merchant customer and a speculative exchange trade can each move PI, but they say different things about the network. Reporting only aggregate transaction counts would risk combining all three. A transparent breakdown would be more informative than a single large activity figure.
The November summit can also clarify what Pi means by an application on Mainnet. A directory listing, a live contract, a product with an operational checkout and a business with regular customers are successive stages. Publishing a breakdown would make the headline count easier to interpret without diminishing the work of earlier stage teams. It would also let readers see whether the same products are gaining users, instead of replacing inactive listings with new ones and reporting only a stable total.
KYC figures deserve similar care. Pi’s 18.1 million verified accounts may be a large potential audience, but their location, eligibility to access specific products and ability to transfer coins vary. A merchant needs customers able to pay and a reliable way to value and settle receipts. Verification removes one barrier; it does not answer whether a customer has spendable PI, whether a checkout works where they live or whether they return to use it. Separating those steps is more useful than treating every verified account as a buyer.
What would change the outlook
For a bullish interpretation, the project would need to show completed deployment, apps using the new protocol capability and sustained transactions that require PI. An increase in repeat paid activity over several reporting periods would matter more than a one-day volume spike. Readers would also want to see liquidity across exchanges and a clearer schedule for coins becoming transferable. Without those pieces, a bounce above eight cents could be ordinary market volatility rather than an upgrade-driven change in demand.
The weaker case is equally concrete. PI could remain near its October range or revisit the July low if more liquid supply meets thin demand and the November presentations offer little verifiable usage. That is a scenario, not a forecast of a specific close. Macro moves across crypto, exchange availability and holder behavior can overwhelm an application milestone. Neither scenario assigns every price movement to Protocol 28.
Pi’s next useful disclosure would connect software, users and economics in one chain of evidence. Show when Mainnet reached version 28, how many active nodes serve it, which applications used its new features, how many distinct people paid through those applications and whether those payments used PI. Each link answers a different question. A completed protocol release would be a starting point; repeat demand would be the result worth measuring.
What to watch
- Protocol status: A dated Mainnet confirmation and network-version data that resolve the “in progress” language on Pi’s node page.
- Developer adoption: Contract addresses or release notes showing apps using coordinated upgrades or improved delayed-data handling in production.
- App activity: Distinct paying users, repeat transactions and settled value for named Mainnet products, with a consistent reporting period.
- Supply: New migration and lockup figures that identify how many PI can become transferable rather than only the maximum token allocation.
- November summit: Demonstrations on November 17 to 19 backed by transaction evidence and clear descriptions of PI’s role in each product.
FAQ
Is Protocol 28 confirmed complete on Pi Mainnet?
Pi scheduled activation for October 16. Its public node page still calls the upgrade in progress as of October 23. A dated confirmation and network-version record would settle the status more cleanly than market commentary.
What does Protocol 28 do?
Pi describes improvements for delayed transaction data and coordinated smart contract upgrades. It has not released an app-wide measurement showing that the changes increased payments or cut fees.
Why is PI below $0.08 after the planned upgrade?
The token traded around $0.0786 on October 23. Price depends on orders, liquidity, transferable supply and broader market conditions. The available evidence does not isolate a single cause for the decline.
Did the upgrade add new PI supply?
A protocol release is separate from migration and unlocking. Circulating supply can change through those processes, but the upgrade announcement alone does not quantify new sellable coins.
Are 300 Mainnet apps evidence of 300 active businesses?
No. Pi reports more than 300 apps, but the announcement did not provide comparable paying-user, merchant or repeat-transaction totals for each one.
Does the stablecoin plan guarantee demand for PI?
No. The project has discussed how stablecoins may serve some payments while PI remains its primary cryptocurrency. Any effect on PI depends on a launched product’s actual fee and settlement design.
When is Pi’s ecosystem summit?
Pi has scheduled the online event for November 17 to 19, 2026. It may offer demonstrations and updated figures, but its existence does not establish future adoption.
What would show the upgrade has economic impact?
Named applications using its capabilities, sustained distinct-user activity and PI-denominated paid transactions would be stronger evidence. Compare the figures over several periods and separate them from exchange turnover.
