A 41-year-old woman has been arrested in Athens on suspicion of attempting to poison her ex-husband, a military doctor, with atropine.
According to media, the man had installed security cameras at his apartment in Peristeri suburb of western Athens.
Monitoring the cameras remotely, he allegedly saw his ex-wife who had keys entered the apartment and added an unknown substance to food, including a jar of honey.
He immediately alerted police, who arrested the woman at the scene.
Her parents, who were waiting in a car nearby, were also arrested.
A search of the car reportedly uncovered a bottle containing 10 milliliters of atropine, a second bottle containing an unidentified substance, a surgical mask, gloves and a syringe.
As a doctor, the ex husband had already noticed “suspicious symptoms” after consuming food. While he was at a bar once and left his drink unattended for a while, he asked the owner to check security cameras, where he saw his ex wife adding something into his drink.
According to newsit.gr, the first time the ex husband felt unwell was last February.
The couple that has been living separated a while ago has an underage child.
Authorities have already collected food items from the 41-year-old man’s home in Peristeri to send for laboratory analysis and determine the exact composition of the substance his estranged wife had been putting into his meals.
Preliminary evidence indicates that the systematic poisoning was caused by atropine; indeed, a small bottle containing 10ml of the substance in question was found in the 41-year-old woman’s car.
Atropine is a medication affecting the nervous system after certain forms of poisoning and allergic reactions.
Police filed a case against the woman on suspicion of attempted dangerous bodily harm, while her parents face charges of complicity.
