Panama has put a name to a young soldier who died on the first day of the US invasion in 1989, and whose family never stopped looking for him.
Panama’s state commission on the 1989 invasion announced on 24 October 2026 that DNA has identified the remains of Roberto Adolfo Aparicio Oliva. He was a 21-year-old soldier who died in the El Chorrillo district of Panama City on 20 December 1989, the day of the US invasion.
The US military invaded Panama that day to remove General Manuel Noriega. For American readers, this identification is a reminder that a US military operation left a human aftermath that Panama is still working through.
What We Know
The Comisión 20 de Diciembre de 1989 is the Panamanian state commission that investigates the victims of the invasion. It said the remains were identified through DNA after more than 36 years of searching by his family.
According to the commission’s account, Aparicio served as an agent, meaning an enlisted soldier, of Batallón 2000, a unit based in Chepo. He was assigned to the reconnaissance section at the Cuartel Central, the headquarters of the Panama Defence Forces.
He was promoted after his death to cabo segundo, or second corporal, by Decree 228 of 31 May 1990. His parents were Félix Adolfo Aparicio Pérez and Lidia Maritza Oliva Gómez, and the family lived in Cerro Batea, in the San Miguelito district.
The newspapers La Prensa, La Estrella de Panamá and El Siglo, all in Panama City, reported the news on 24 October 2026. El Siglo described the case as 36 years of pain and waiting.
His family had been told that he died, but they could never find his body. They searched hospitals and cemeteries and followed exhumations for 36 years.
Why the Search Took 36 Years
His remains were buried in a common grave at the Jardín de Paz cemetery. They were heavily carbonised, which made recovering genetic material a scientific challenge.
The Fundación de Antropología Forense de Guatemala, a forensic anthropology foundation, extracted the DNA and built a genetic profile. Panama’s Instituto de Medicina Legal y Ciencias Forenses, the national forensic medicine institute, then compared that profile with reference samples from the family.
The comparison took place within an investigation by the Ministerio Público, Panama’s prosecutors. The reports do not say how long the laboratory work took.
This case follows earlier work that we covered when Panama began exhuming victims of the 1989 invasion. On 19 December 2025, La Prensa reported that prosecutors had identified 11 people from remains exhumed at collective graves in the Jardín de Paz and Monte Esperanza cemeteries.
La Prensa added that 21 samples had been sent to the Guatemalan foundation at that point. The identification of Aparicio is a further result of the same slow process of DNA comparison and justice.
What Is Not Known
The commission has not said on which date the DNA match was completed. It has also not said whether the remains will be handed to the family, or when.
It is not known how many people are still missing. Details about the cause of his death are also not known.
The announcements reported so far do not settle these questions. We will report further details once Panama’s authorities publish them.
What It Means for US Readers
The invasion was a US military operation, and its victims are still being identified more than three decades later. The total number of dead has never been settled, so each identification matters to the historical record.
In December 2025, commission president Rolando Murgas Torraza said the commission should become permanent to preserve historical memory. La Prensa also reported that the commission’s funding for 2026 was uncertain.
The inquiry runs through Panamanian prosecutors and forensic scientists. Experts from Guatemala supplied the genetic analysis that made this match possible.
Identifications are slow because many remains lie in collective graves. What happens next for the commission and for this family has not been announced.
