The Mexican government has approved the appointment of Reno Omokri as Nigeria’s ambassador to Mexico, ending months of uncertainty over the diplomatic posting.
Omokri announced the development in a post on X on Tuesday, saying the Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of Mexico in Abuja, José Manuel Briseño Flores, had delivered the formal diplomatic approval, known as agrément, to the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
He said the document confirming Mexico’s acceptance of his appointment was delivered to the ministry’s Director of Protocol, Ambassador Babagana Wakil, in Abuja.
Omokri expressed gratitude over the development, describing it as an opportunity to serve Nigeria in the diplomatic arena.
The approval clears the way for him to serve as Nigeria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the United Mexican States, with concurrent accreditation to Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.
Tinubu nominated Omokri in 2025
President Bola Tinubu nominated Omokri for an ambassadorial position in November 2025 alongside several other nominees, including former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, and former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Mahmood Yakubu.
The Senate confirmed Omokri and other ambassadorial nominees in December 2025, paving the way for their eventual deployment to foreign missions.
On March 6, 2026, Tinubu approved the posting of 65 ambassadors-designate and high commissioners to their respective countries, with Omokri assigned to Mexico City.
However, his deployment remained subject to formal diplomatic approval from the Mexican government, a standard requirement in the appointment of ambassadors.
The delay had generated speculation about the status of his posting, particularly after Mexico was identified among the countries yet to communicate formal acceptance of Nigerian ambassadorial appointments.
Foreign Affairs Ministry had explained delay
In August, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosed that Mexico and Japan were among the countries yet to convey formal acceptance of two outstanding ambassadorial appointments.
The ministry said it was engaging the affected countries and expressed confidence that the necessary approvals would be secured in due course.
Omokri had earlier dismissed speculation that Mexico had rejected his appointment.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today in June, he attributed the delay to diplomatic procedures and preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which Mexico is co-hosting with the United States and Canada.
The latest development confirms Mexico’s acceptance of his appointment, following the diplomatic process required before an ambassador can formally take up a posting.
What agrément means
Agrément is the formal consent granted by a receiving country before a diplomat nominated by another country can be appointed as its ambassador.
The process allows the host country to approve the proposed representative before the appointment is finalised and the diplomat assumes official duties.
Omokri previously served as a media aide to former President Goodluck Jonathan and has remained a prominent figure in Nigerian political commentary.
His appointment places him in charge of representing Nigeria’s diplomatic interests in Mexico, while also covering Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua under the concurrent accreditation arrangement.
