A protester who heckled Donald Trump at his midterm rally in Youngstown, Ohio, was physically assaulted and removed from the event, but fake AI-generated photos recreating the incident are going viral online. The images carry digital watermarks identifying them as AI-generated. While footage confirms the woman was punched, there is no evidence to support Trump’s claim that the protester was "paid" to disrupt his speech, as he mocked the protester's weight. Vedika Bahl explains in Truth or Fake.
One image shows a young woman wearing a “Release the Epstein files” T-shirt, raising both middle fingers as angry Donald Trump supporters surround her. Shared widely on X and Threads, the image prompted one user to describe her as a “hero” standing against “male violence”. The user claimed the woman had been punched, had her hair pulled and had been dragged to the ground before security arrived and removed her from the scene.
While footage confirms that the woman was punched in the face and subsequently removed by security, the image circulating online is not authentic. It was generated using artificial intelligence.
The image contains an invisible digital watermark known as SynthID, and that the photo was created using Google’s AI tools. The user who shared it later acknowledged that the image was not genuine, saying they had "intentionally chosen a symbolic graphic over the horrific raw footage".
A second AI-generated image, which amassed more than a million views in one X post alone, depicts the protester being punched in the face and attacked by the crowd. Visual inconsistencies, including text on the woman’s T-shirt that does not match the clothing worn by the protester in the real footage, raise further questions about its authenticity. The image also contains a SynthID digital watermark indicating that it was made or edited using OpenAI tools.
Although the images appear to draw on real events, neither is an authentic depiction of what took place, and it's important users are aware that the photo is AI-generated content.
What happened at Trump’s rally?
Video footage shows the woman heckling Trump during his speech before a member of the crowd physically attacks her. As the incident unfolds, Trump mocks the protester while sections of the crowd cheer and chant “USA”.
During the commotion, Trump accuses her of being a “paid protester” and calls her “scum”, claiming that demonstrators are paid by the political left to disrupt his events. He also mocks her weight, referring to her as a “fat guy” and saying she “needs to go on a diet”.
According to NBC News, at least two men were involved in the confrontation. One punched the woman in the face and pulled her hair before uniformed law enforcement officers removed her from the scene.
Youngstown Mayor Derrick McDowell condemned the incident, saying in a statement that “senseless political violence has no place in our community or democratic protest”. He added that everyone attending a public event, regardless of their political views, should be able to do so without fear of being assaulted or threatened.
CBS News reported that at least three protesters were removed from the rally. However, there is no evidence to support Trump’s claim that the protesters were paid to disrupt his speech.
