The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported a new case of poliovirus in Nangarhar province.
The organization announced on Monday, October 12, that two new cases of poliovirus had been recorded in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
According to the WHO, the case in Afghanistan was detected in Surkh Rod district of Nangarhar province, while the case in Pakistan was identified in Khyber district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
With this latest case, the total number of polio cases reported in Afghanistan since the beginning of 2026 has risen to 36.
Afghanistan and Pakistan remain the only countries in the world where polio has not been fully eradicated.
Despite ongoing polio vaccination campaigns in both countries, the WHO’s latest figures show that Afghanistan has reported more cases this year than Pakistan.
