The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) says it will conduct fresh party congresses to elect new candidates in constituencies affected by the defection of some of its candidates to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The party announced this in a statement issued on Tuesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, assuring members and supporters that the defections would not derail its preparations for the 2027 general elections.
The NDC said the replacement process would be conducted in line with what it described as the provisions of the Electoral Act 2026, with the aim of selecting credible and competent candidates for the affected constituencies.
The party also urged its members and supporters not to be discouraged by the defections, insisting that it remained committed to its political objectives.
While accusing the APC of offering incentives to some of its candidates to secure their defection, the NDC did not name those involved or provide evidence to support the allegation.
The party described the departing candidates as lacking commitment to its ideals, saying their exit would not weaken its resolve to challenge the ruling party.
“These are the last kicks of a dying horse that has seen the handwriting on the wall of its imminent defeat,” the statement said.
The NDC reiterated its commitment to improving governance, security and economic prosperity in Nigeria, declaring that it remained focused on its political mission ahead of the 2027 elections.
“A New Nigeria is possible. We can do it!” the statement added.
The APC had not responded to the NDC’s allegations at the time of filing this report.
