By Siraj Khan,Nepalgunj, Oct. 15: With the onset of the Dashain festival, the Jamunaha border crossing between Nepal and India in Nepalgunj is witnessing massive crowds of people returning home from India to celebrate the festival, with the rush continuing from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM.
Inspector Rajan Prasad Bhattarai, Chief of the Area Police Office in Jamunaha, stated that around 10,000 people have been returning home daily through the Jamunaha border point over the past few days.
He noted that the number of people returning home to celebrate the festival is rising with the commencement of Dashain, the great festival of Hindus.
Police Chief Bhattarai stated, "Until last week, five to six thousand Nepalis were returning home daily through this border point, whereas this week, around 10,000 people are returning each day."
The Area Police Office, Jamunaha, reported that more than 60,000 Nepalis have returned home through this point in the last six days alone.
According to the office, residents from various districts across the Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpaschim provinces return via the Jamunaha border crossing. Having undertaken long journeys by bus and train from India to reach the border, they describe the feeling of relief and joy upon arriving back in their home country as truly special.
Surya Bahadur BK from Rakam Karnali, Dailekh—who returned with a 13-member team after working in Shimla, India—expressed deep love for his country but explained that he was compelled by necessity to go abroad for work.
He expressed a wish never to have to go to another country again upon returning home, noting that such trips are often undertaken out of compulsion.
A passenger help desk has been established at Jamunaha to ensure the convenience and safety of travelers returning from India, addressing the various difficulties they have faced during festive seasons in the past.
Dil Kumar Tamang, Chief District Officer of Banke stated that an assistance desk has been set up to prevent robbery and fraud in border areas and to ensure travelers reach their destinations safely. He also mentioned that a special security plan has been implemented, prioritizing the safety of citizens.
Police authorities have stepped up surveillance by deploying security personnel from the Jamunah border crossing to the bus parks in Nepalgunj and Kohalpur. Both the Nepal Police and the Armed Police Force have deployed personnel in plainclothes as well.
