Luka Doncic’s impressive start to life as the Los Angeles Lakers’ franchise leader has brought fresh attention to claims that the Dallas Mavericks tried to damage his reputation following their decision to trade him in February 2025.
The Slovenian was criticised over his conditioning, defensive struggles and leadership during his time in Dallas. However, his performances in Los Angeles have strengthened the argument that the Mavericks underestimated what they were giving up.
Doncic has also worked on his fitness and built a strong relationship with his Lakers team-mates, including Austin Reaves, as he prepares for another season in which he could challenge for the NBA’s biggest individual honours.
Dallas Mavericks accused of trying to undermine Luka Doncic after Los Angeles Lakers trade
The Athletic’s Sam Amick has claimed that the Mavericks pursued a smear campaign behind the scenes to justify their decision to trade Doncic, who had led Dallas to the 2024 NBA Finals before losing to the Boston Celtics.
Amick wrote that even those who questioned Doncic’s defence, his relationship with officials and his previous physique recognised his ability, accusing Dallas of trying to undermine his reputation after the blockbuster move.
The report suggests the Mavericks wanted to make Lakers supporters question whether Doncic could deliver in a high-pressure environment. Instead, the 27-year-old quickly established himself in Los Angeles and developed strong chemistry with Reaves and LeBron James before James’ departure to the Philadelphia 76ers.
Former Mavericks president Nico Harrison reportedly had concerns about Doncic’s work ethic and whether he could lead Dallas to a championship. The franchise subsequently invested in Anthony Davis, but Harrison was eventually fired amid growing fan anger.
Doncic has since made significant changes to his conditioning, while also taking a more active role in building the Lakers’ team culture. He organised an off-season trip to Slovenia for his team-mates and has been involved in discussions about strengthening the roster.
His start to the campaign has also revived discussion about his MVP chances. Doncic recorded 28 points, eight rebounds and seven assists in the Lakers’ 127-105 win over the Golden State Warriors, while Draymond Green argued that voters could take his consistent excellence for granted.
Reaves also suggested that voters had become accustomed to Doncic’s production, making his performances appear less remarkable than they should.
With Doncic now the undisputed leader in Los Angeles, the Lakers’ results could shape his MVP prospects. His performances are already challenging the criticism that followed him out of Dallas, while the allegations surrounding the trade continue to cast a shadow over the Mavericks’ decision.
