Detective Branch (DB) police have arrested Abul Kalam Azad Lenin, known as 'Shooter Lenin', 46, an expelled BNP leader and one of the prime accused in the attack, looting and vandalism at Radda MCH-FP Centre in Mirpur, Dhaka.
Lenin was arrested in Mirsarai, Chattogram, today (19 October), Mohammad Rakib Khan, deputy commissioner of the DB's Mirpur Division, confirmed in the afternoon.
The DB's Mirpur zonal team detained him during a drive based on a tip-off earlier in the morning. Lenin is a resident of the capital's Shah Ali area.
Police said Lenin is an accused in the case filed with Shah Ali Police Station over the attack on the Radda health centre. He is also accused of involvement in various criminal activities, including extortion, illegal occupation and creating terror in Mirpur.
More than 25 people have so far been arrested in connection with the case, most of them leaders and activists of the local BNP and its affiliated organisations, police said.
Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Rakib Khan said investigators had prepared a list of at least 40 people directly involved in the incident. DB operations are continuing to arrest the remaining accused, he added.
The attack took place on the night of 25 September at the Radda MCH-FP Centre in Mirpur-1. A group of people allegedly vandalised and looted the facility before demolishing its structures using heavy machinery.
Amid criticism over the incident, reserved-seat MP Ferdousi Ahmed Mishti resigned.
