SEOUL, Oct. 19 (Yonhap) -- Police said Monday they will improve their case notification service to keep victims and complainants informed of key developments, including whether suspects have been apprehended or questioned.
The Korean National Police Agency (KNPA) said the enhanced service is part of a broader shift toward a "citizen-centered" approach to public safety.
Currently, victims and complainants can check their case status through the Criminal Justice Portal, but the information is limited to a generic "under investigation" notice, making it difficult to track specific developments.
To address this, the police plan to develop a system that allows users to check key details, such as whether suspects have been apprehended or questioned, while expanding the range of information available through the service.
The KNPA plans to consult the Personal Information Protection Commission on whether notifying victims and complainants of suspects' status, including their detention, would violate personal data protection laws.
The agency said it aims to launch the enhanced service by the end of this year and the necessary technical preparations will proceed in parallel.
In a related move, police are considering changing the KNPA's English name by replacing "Agency" with "Service," reflecting the aim to transform the organization into one that prioritizes public safety and rights.
