Coinbase Derivatives switched off futures and perpetual futures trading for a scheduled maintenance window expected to last up to nine hours.
The pause began at 5:00 AM CT on October 24, 2026. It was slated to wrap up around 2:00 PM CT.
What was switched off, and what wasn’t
The outage covered futures and perpetual futures products on Coinbase Financial Markets, the regulated entity behind Coinbase’s derivatives offering.
Traders were not locked out entirely. Account logins and balances stayed accessible throughout the window.
What they could not do was act. New trades were off the table, and so were changes to existing orders.
Coinbase pointed users to its status page for updates during the pause.
Why the window ran so long
This was not routine overnight housekeeping. The maintenance served two purposes at once.
First, it formed part of Coinbase Derivatives’ quarterly upkeep cycle. Second, it coincided with the company’s participation in the Futures Industry Association’s Annual Disaster Recovery Test.
A disaster recovery test is essentially a fire drill for financial infrastructure. Firms check whether their backup systems can take over if primary systems fail, so nobody discovers a problem during an actual emergency.
The contrast with earlier pauses is notable. A comparable maintenance event in January 2026 ran for only about three hours.
So the October window was roughly three times longer than its January counterpart.
According to the research findings, the advance notice did its job. No significant price swings or liquidity crunches were observed while trading was suspended.
The road to 24×7 trading
Coinbase Derivatives is in the middle of moving certain products to a true 24×7 trading model.
As part of that shift, the company is phasing out the daily closures it has used on weekdays. Scheduled maintenance windows, however, are staying.
What this means for traders and the platform
For active derivatives traders, the practical lesson is about planning. Quarterly windows now look like a recurring fixture, and they may not always be short.
Anyone holding leveraged positions needs to account for stretches when adjusting or closing a trade simply is not possible.
For Coinbase, taking part in an industry-wide disaster recovery test signals that its derivatives business is operating to the standards expected of regulated futures venues.
The research findings suggest that kind of transparency and predictability could support user trust over time. They add that the move toward 24×7 trading may enhance the user experience and could potentially lead to higher trading volumes and better liquidity in the long run.
