The University of Tashkent for Applied Sciences (UTAS) has improved its position in the UI GreenMetric Sustainable University Rankings 2026, ranking 968th globally and 36th in Uzbekistan. This marks a significant step forward, reflecting the university's growing commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.
In 2026, the ranking welcomed a record 2,016 universities from 110 countries, compared to 1,745 universities in 2025 - showing that the number of participating institutions continues to grow. With the continued growth of the ranking, UTAS advanced its position in 2026, entering the global top 1,000 universities, reflecting the university’s strong and sustained commitment to sustainability.
“For a modern university, sustainability is no longer a separate area of activity, but an important part of its overall strategy. We aim not only to create a comfortable and environmentally responsible university environment, but also to foster among our students an understanding that careful use of resources and responsibility for the environment are shared responsibilities. UTAS entering the global Top 1,000 universities in the UI GreenMetric ranking demonstrates that we are moving in the right direction. For us, this is both an important achievement and a strong motivation to continue this work, introduce new environmental initiatives, and gradually raise the university’s sustainability standards,” said Abdusalom Vakhitovich Umarov, Rector of the University of Tashkent for Applied Sciences.
The UI GreenMetric Sustainable University Rankings, initiated in 2010, evaluates universities across 60 indicators grouped into 7 key criteria. UTAS demonstrated strong performance across multiple categories, including water conservation, waste management, sustainable transportation, and academic research on sustainability. The university's participation reflects its strategic commitment to integrating sustainability into every aspect of campus life.
Looking ahead, The University of Tashkent for Applied Sciences will continue to strengthen its position by expanding green initiatives, implementing energy-efficient solutions, and enhancing environmental education for students and staff - bringing the university closer to the top tier of the world's greenest universities.
