Clearwater, Fla.-based BayCare has opened a $33 million proton therapy center.
The center is at the Fred J. Woods Radiation Therapy Center at BayCare’s St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa and treats adults and children, according to an Oct. 14 health system news release. It uses a compact system from Mevion Medical Systems with an upright chair that lets patients receive proton treatment while seated. BayCare said it is the second site in the world to use the technology.
The facility, announced in 2023, is part of BayCare’s broader investment in cancer services, which includes radiation oncology programs at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater, St. Anthony’s Hospital in St. Petersburg and Winter Haven (Fla.) Hospital.
BayCare operates 16 hospitals across West Central Florida.
