Sometimes I struggle to justify a coffee, let alone a pair of shoes that costs upwards of £1,000. And while Saint Laurent loafers may well be the stuff of sartorial dreams, its price tag is enough to give even the most devoted fashion enthusiast pause for thought. As much as you can appreciate the finer things in life, there's just something about finding a high street alternative to that designer purchase that will, most likely, always remain on your designer wishlist and never actually in your own wardrobe.
That's where I come onto my most recent find. Zara's Split Suede Loafers bear a striking resemblance to its designer counterparts, made in a similarly tan suede fabric with gathered detailing on the front and a penny strap.

With flip flop season nearing the end of its tenure, it seems only right to make the transition to a closed-toe shoe (aka the loafer). Spotted on seemingly every third person at the most recent London Fashion Week, suede loafers not only get points for practicality - but also comfort too. Better still, its understated suede finish makes it easy to style: wear it with straight-leg denim and a trench coat for a day of running errands, or, style your Zara Split Suede Loafers with a pair of high-waisted trousers and a white shirt for a day in the office.

Of course, nothing compares to the real thing, but when the high street delivers a look this compelling, the case for spending four figures becomes harder to make. Particularly when the alternative leaves enough change for a rather nice dinner, a few coffees and (most importantly) a little less explaining to do - whether you're trying to justify it to yourself or to the spending police (husband), as we like to call it in my house. Plus, Zara's suede loafer offering is packed full of plenty of colours to choose from, whether you're in the market for a delectable chocolate brown suede or a goes-with-everything navy.
