An Israeli doctor returning from Thailand faces legal proceedings after customs officers found about 300 banana and staghorn fern seedlings in five suitcases at Ben-Gurion Airport is Israel.
The man, a resident of central Israel, was stopped after entering the airport’s green customs channel, according to Israel’s Agriculture and Food Security Ministry.
Customs inspectors found the plants during a search of his luggage. The ministry’s Plant Protection and Inspection Services confiscated the seedlings, while airport customs investigators questioned the traveller.
The doctor told investigators the plants were for his private garden, which he said had become a “jungle” over the years. He said collecting unusual ornamental plants was a personal hobby.
Israeli authorities said importing plants or plant products without the required permits — even a single plant intended for personal use — is an offence under the country’s Plant Protection Law.
The ministry said banana seedlings from Thailand present a particular biosecurity risk because they may carry pests and plant diseases not found in Israel. Such an introduction could severely harm the country’s banana-growing sector, it said.
“Even a small plant in a suitcase, or a single fruit or vegetable, can cause immense damage to agriculture and nature in Israel,” Shlomit Tzioni, director of the ministry’s Plant Protection and Inspection Services, said in a statement.
“Even plants that appear healthy can carry pests and diseases that do not exist in the country,” she added.
The case is a reminder for travellers to check their destination’s import rules before packing plants, seeds, fruit or vegetables bought abroad. Many countries require permits or prohibit such items altogether to prevent the spread of invasive pests and diseases.
