Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — Water continues to flow in the Amudarya despite seasonal declines in discharge along some sections of the river, Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Water Management said in response to social media reports about falling water levels.
The Amudarya is formed by the confluence of the Panj and Vakhsh rivers, which originate in the mountains of Tajikistan and Afghanistan. The Kafirnigan River is also one of its major tributaries.
The Nurek Reservoir is located on the Vakhsh River in Tajikistan, in the upper part of the Amudarya basin.
As of 9 October 2026, the reservoir’s inflow stood at 408 cubic metres per second, while outflow was 320 cubic metres per second. The volume of water stored in the reservoir reached 10.54 billion cubic metres.
At the Termez hydrological station, which monitors the Amudarya as it enters Uzbekistan, the water level stood at 239 cm on 9 October. This was 27 cm higher than during the same period in 2025.
Meanwhile, water discharge at the Kerki hydrological station was 499 cubic metres per second, down 63 cubic metres per second from a year earlier.
The Water Management Ministry explained that declines in river levels and discharge in September and October are part of the seasonal hydrological cycle.
After the growing season ends, water reserves are accumulated in reservoirs to meet demand during the following season.
