Chief Justice Komba Kamanda has commissioned the first ultramodern judicial quarters in Kailahun District, reaffirming his commitment to improving the working and living conditions of Judges and Magistrates as part of his Access to Justice agenda.
The facility, located at Reservation in Kailahun Town, is designed to provide residential accommodation for the Resident High Court Judge and Magistrate, with modern amenities intended to create a comfortable living environment for judicial officers serving outside Freetown.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Chief Justice Kamanda described the project as a significant investment in the administration of justice, noting that adequate accommodation and a conducive working environment were essential for judicial officers to discharge their responsibilities effectively.
“This is the meaning of true justice and forms part of my Access to Justice agenda,” he said.
The Chief Justice reaffirmed his determination to ensure that judicial officers across the country have access to appropriate residential facilities and improved working conditions. He expressed his ambition to establish similar ultramodern judicial quarters in every district or district headquarters town.
“I will continue to ensure that Judges and Magistrates are working in a conducive environment to better do their work,” he assured.
The newly commissioned facility comprises residential units with three bedrooms, each with an en-suite bathroom, alongside a dining room, kitchen, store and boys’ quarters. It is also equipped with a solar power system, DStv television services and other essential amenities.
Chief Justice Kamanda acknowledged the support of President Julius Maada Bio, commending his commitment to investing in judicial infrastructure and providing resources to strengthen the administration of justice. He also expressed appreciation to the people of Kailahun for their support and cooperation in bringing the project to completion.

However, he urged the relevant authorities to extend similar accommodation provisions to judicial support staff, emphasising that their roles were indispensable to the effective functioning of the courts.
“The Judge and Magistrate can never work without the judicial support staff,” PC Banya said.
The Minister of Works and Public Assets, Dr Dennis M. Sandy, also welcomed the initiative and reaffirmed the Government’s commitment, under President Bio’s leadership, to supporting similar projects aimed at improving judicial infrastructure nationwide.
The Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Alpha Sesay, described the commissioning as an important step towards strengthening access to justice by providing suitable accommodation for the Resident High Court Judge and Magistrate.

The ceremony concluded with the formal handover of the keys to the facility by the Minister of Works and Public Assets to Chief Justice Kamanda, followed by the cutting of the ceremonial tape to officially open the quarters.
The commissioning marks another step in the Judiciary’s efforts to strengthen its infrastructure outside the capital, with the Chief Justice expressing a commitment to extending similar facilities to other districts across Sierra Leone
