Space constraints and a glaring lack of basic passenger amenities at the Tirupattur bus stand in Sivaganga district have continued to cause severe inconvenience for commuters and transport operators alike.
Handling over 200 bus trips daily, the facility has struggled with inadequate spatial planning for years. Although the bus stand underwent a ₹3.30 crore renovation under the Smart Cities Mission seven years ago, the project failed to expand the footprint or resolve core congestion issues. Instead, 54 shops were constructed in a cramped layout primarily for commercial purposes.
The resulting spatial crunch forced drivers to park buses haphazardly and obstructively across the yard, making it difficult for passengers to locate and board their respective vehicles. Compounding the chaos is a severe shortage of seating, leaving elderly travellers, women, and children with no option but to sit directly on the ground while waiting for their buses.
In light of these mounting difficulties, public and commuter demands have grown louder for authorities to step in—not only to upgrade existing passenger facilities immediately but also to take swift action toward constructing a spacious new bus stand equipped with all modern amenities.
