The Bay Roberts native was part of a blockbuster deal on Oct. 23 that will send Winnipeg Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck to the New Jersey Devils.
The trade was finalized on Oct. 23 and includes Mercer, goaltender Nico Daws, forward Nick Bjugstad, forward Alexander Command, a second-round pick in 2029 and a seventh-round pick in 2027.
Mercer was a first-round draft pick of the Devils in the 2020 NHL Draft and has been a stalwart in New Jersey’s lineup ever since.
He leaves the team as the franchise leader in consecutive games played, having appeared in all 420 games for the Devils since debuting in the 2021-2022 season. That’s also good for fourth amongst active NHL skaters.
We have acquired: 🏒 F Dawson Mercer 🏒 F Alexander Command 🏒 G Nico Daws 🏒 F Nick Bjugstad 🔢 and two draft picks https://t.co/vAN00bP0dO — Winnipeg Jets (@NHLJets) October 23, 2026
In those games, Mercer has registered 103 goals and 213 points in the Swamp.
This season, he has yet to score, but has four assists in 10 games.
For Hellebuyck, the trade brings his time with the Jets organization to an end. It comes after he was suspended ahead of training camp for requesting a trade to an American market.
He has ties to Newfoundland as well, having played 58 games with the St. John’s IceCaps in the 2014-2015 season.
