WhatsApp is testing a new feature that could make it easier for users to request someone’s location directly through a chat. The feature aims to simplify the process by allowing users to send a location request without having to explain how the other person can share their location.
The feature was spotted in WhatsApp version 2.26.41.11 during an APK teardown. According to the findings, the messaging platform is testing a new “Request location” option within the existing “Send location” screen.
How the New Location Request Feature Works on WhatsApp
The new option reportedly appears alongside the existing features for sharing a current location or live location. When users select “Request location,” WhatsApp creates a card titled “Location request” that appears in the conversation.
This could make it easier to ask friends, family members, or colleagues to share their location. Instead of sending a separate message and explaining the steps, users may be able to send a request directly through WhatsApp’s location menu.
The feature could also reduce confusion for people who are unfamiliar with the app’s location-sharing options. It may help users receive a map location instead of relying on a typed address or additional messages.
Recipient Experience Remains Unclear
Although the feature has appeared in testing, its complete functionality remains unknown. The initial test reportedly worked on one device but failed to function properly on another. On the second device, the request appeared as a message indicating that the feature was not supported.
This suggests that WhatsApp has not yet completed the feature or made it available across devices. The testing also leaves questions about how recipients will see location requests and whether they will have different options for responding.
One possibility is that tapping the request card will open WhatsApp’s location-sharing screen, allowing recipients to choose between sharing their current location and their live location. However, this is only a possible explanation, and the actual process has not been confirmed.
WhatsApp May Improve Location Sharing
Apple’s iMessage already offers a similar option that lets users request another person’s location through its Location menu. WhatsApp’s proposed feature could bring comparable convenience to its large user base.
However, WhatsApp has not confirmed when the feature will become available or whether it will be included in a future update. For now, the option remains under development, and its final design and functionality may change before a public release.
