The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras), the organising institute for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2027, has reopened the online application portal today, October 15. Interested applicants can complete their registration by visiting the official website, gate2027.iitm.ac.in. The facility is available only for a limited period and requires candidates to pay the applicable late fee. IIT Madras announced the decision after receiving multiple requests from aspirants seeking additional time to submit their applications. However, the institute has confirmed that the registration deadline will not be extended any further.
According to the official announcement, the GATE 2027 registration portal with the late fee will remain accessible until October 16, 2026, at 10:29 AM.
IIT Madras will conduct GATE 2027 on February 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21, 2027, across examination centres in India. The examination will cover 30 subject papers and serve as an important qualifying test for candidates seeking postgraduate engineering and technology programmes, including Master of Technology (MTech) courses, as well as other opportunities for which GATE scores are accepted.
GATE 2027 will also introduce changes to its subject-paper structure. IIT Madras has added Robotics and Automation (RA) as a new test paper, expanding the options available to candidates from relevant engineering and technology backgrounds. In another change, Textile Engineering and Fibre Science (TF) will be offered as a sectional paper under Textile Engineering and Fibre Science. Aspirants should review the official examination information and paper-selection guidelines before submitting their applications to ensure that they choose the appropriate subject. Those planning to appear for two papers must select a combination approved by the organising institute, as not every possible combination may be available.
To register for GATE 2027, candidates must access the GATE Online Application Processing System (GOAPS) through the official registration portal and log in using the required DigiLocker credentials. They should then enter or verify their personal information retrieved from DigiLocker and provide the requested details of their parent or guardian. The next step involves filling in information about their qualifying degree and educational institution before selecting the GATE 2027 paper they intend to take. Candidates applying for two papers must check the list of permitted combinations published by the organising institute before making their selections.
Applicants must subsequently choose six preferred examination cities from within the same examination zone and upload or submit the required documents in accordance with the application guidelines. Before proceeding to payment, candidates should carefully review the complete application form to confirm that their personal details, academic information, selected paper and examination-city preferences are correct. They must then pay the applicable registration fee through one of the available online payment methods and submit the application. After successful submission, candidates should save the confirmation page and retain a copy for future reference.
