Will Varun Chakravarthy get the nod ahead of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi? Predicting India’s playing XI for 2nd T20I vs New Zealand
India must now choose between a teenage batting prodigy and a proven spinner after an injury to Ishan Kishan opened up a spot in the side.
The wicketkeeper-batter will miss the second T20I against New Zealand at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on Saturday, and the team management is weighing its options after a record-breaking chase in the series opener.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed that Kishan suffered a low-grade right adductor strain during the first T20I. Its medical team is monitoring his progress, but he will not be available as India try to stretch their 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

His absence matters because he was part of the batting group that had been reshuffled for the opening game, where he was dismissed for one off three balls.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was in the squad but sat out the first match, and he is now one of the obvious candidates to replace Kishan. The 15-year-old has already made his senior international debut, and he was part of the gold-medal-winning men’s cricket team at the 2026 Asian Games.
Picking him would therefore mean a return to the playing XI, which has been a talking point among fans for several matches.
Speaking about Sooryavanshi, batting coach Sitanshu Kotak said, “If Ishan doesn’t play, unless he recovers completely, which the medical team will advise, Vaibhav could definitely step in for him. He is one of the strongest contenders.”
The decision is not as simple as swapping one batter for another. According to Revsportz, India could surprise people by going in a different direction and might prefer an extra bowling option in Varun Chakravarthy.
If Sooryavanshi does come in, the order at the top becomes the next question. One is Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma and Sooryavanshi in that order, another is Abhishek, Sooryavanshi and Samson.

- Vaibhav Sooryavanshi

- Axar Patel
- Nitish Kumar Reddy
- Bhuvneshwar Kumar
- Arshdeep Singh
- Mayank Yadav
India should pick Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, but the balance of the side still matters
The case for playing Sooryavanshi is strong, and not only because of his talent. He has sat out six consecutive matches, the team has just lost a batter, and an injury is the cleanest way to give a young player a game without dropping a set opener. Fans have wanted this for a while, and there is little downside in trying him in a series that India already lead.
However, Chakravarthy's case deserves a hearing. India’s bowling attack is a lighter unit than usual, and a spinner like Chakravarthy could be a handy option. The best answer may depend on the pitch, which should be assessed on match day.
Ideally, India would play Sooryavanshi and keep their bowling resources intact by resting a batter lower down the order, since Dhir and Reddy both bring some depth. Whatever the final call, the management should avoid treating the teenager as a stopgap. If he plays, he should get a clear role and a run of games, so the selection reads as a plan and not a reaction to an injury.
