Chile Argentina Relations After Poduje Row

CHILE · DIPLOMACY

Chile’s housing minister called Argentina’s president “increasingly crazy” on Friday and apologised within hours. No Argentine government comment appears in any report reviewed by Saturday morning.

Chile Argentina relations face a test after Minister Iván Poduje called President Javier Milei “increasingly crazy” on Friday, 16 October. Poduje apologised on X that afternoon, and President José Antonio Kast said in La Paz that “this will not be repeated”.

This piece sets out who is who, where the relationship stands and what is scheduled next. It follows the earlier news report on Kast’s statement and builds only on facts the sources establish.

What Happened on Friday, 16 October

Poduje, Chile’s Housing and Urbanism Minister, spoke that morning at a business forum run by Icare in Santiago. Asked about public investment, he called Milei’s criticism of public works “nonsense” and said Milei is “increasingly crazy”.

Hours later Poduje posted an apology on X, saying he had made comments about Argentina’s president that were not appropriate. He offered “sincere apologies”, La Tercera and BioBioChile reported, and kept his point that public investment drives growth.

Interior Minister Claudio Alvarado, who ran the government while Kast was abroad, called the remarks improper. He said the government considered the matter closed, T13 reported.

Asked whether Argentina had complained, Alvarado said he was reserving that topic. Asked about a reprimand for Poduje, he said the apology was enough for him, La Tercera reported.

Alvarado added that what a minister says is read as a government decision, Meganoticias reported. Kast, speaking at the Chilean consulate in La Paz, said the government regretted the remarks, BioBioChile and Emol reported.

Poduje had apologised publicly “as is proper”, Kast said, adding that “this will not be repeated”. La Tercera noted that Kast did not say whether a call from Argentina had prompted the apology.

Who Is Who in the Row

Iván Poduje is the Housing and Urbanism Minister in Kast’s conservative government. Javier Milei is Argentina’s libertarian president, described by El Día as a friend of Kast.

José Antonio Kast is Chile’s conservative president, who visited Bolivia on Friday. Claudio Alvarado is his Interior Minister, whom Chilean outlets call vice president, and he was in charge while Kast travelled.

Iván Moreira, Senate vice president for the conservative UDI party, called the remarks “very imprudent” and asked Poduje to apologise. Hans Marowski, vice president of the National Libertarian Party, said a minister must live up to his office.

Libertarian deputy Paulina Muñoz urged Kast to align his ministers’ messages. Pablo Quirno is Argentina’s foreign minister, and Francisco Pérez Mackenna holds the same post in Chile.

Where Chile Argentina Relations Stand

The remark landed amid weeks of tension over the Strait of Magellan, where both governments say the 1881 and 1984 treaties apply. In late August an Argentine Air Force general said “Magallanes, the south, the Drake, all of that is sovereignty”, Diario Constitucional reported.

Argentina’s Foreign Ministry replied on Tuesday, 25 August, that the treaties “fully govern” and are “definitive”. Chile sent a protest note, and Kast welcomed the Argentine statement, Diario Constitucional reported.

On Thursday, 3 September, after Milei’s visit to Santiago, the presidents issued a joint declaration reaffirming the treaties. The Chamber of Deputies then passed seven resolutions on the Strait, published on 7 October.

One resolution, passed 60 to 31, asks the president to put Chile’s interests ahead of political affinities with Argentina’s government. That debate is part of the wider Falklands dispute in Chile’s Congress.

On Saturday, 10 October, Conclusión reported that Quirno replied “No” on X to an article by Chilean libertarian Johannes Kaiser. The article asked whether Argentina was preparing a new legal offensive over the Strait.

On Wednesday, 14 October, Emol reported that Quirno called relations normal. He said some sectors in Chile were trying to make the two countries fight.

The Chilean ship Danstar adds to the tension, with sailings from Punta Arenas to the Falkland Islands planned from November. La Tercera reported that Quirno ruled out stopping the vessel if the trade is commercial and coordinated.

What Happens Next

The only scheduled event in the reports is the first Danstar sailing from Punta Arenas to Puerto Stanley, expected in November. No meeting between Kast and Milei, or between their foreign ministers, appears in any report reviewed.

Chile’s government says the episode is closed, so no sanction or further step has been announced. Alvarado declined to say whether Poduje was reprimanded, and Kast said only that it would not be repeated.

Critics inside Chile have asked for more. Moreira warned that everything said carries consequences, and Marowski asked the Executive to demand accountability, BioBioChile reported.

Argentina can answer in public, raise the matter through diplomatic channels or let it pass. Which it chooses is not known, and none of these paths has been announced.

What It Means for US Readers

No tariff, sanction, travel rule or market measure has followed the remark in the reports reviewed. For US investors and travellers, conditions between Chile and Argentina are unchanged so far.

The episode touches two governments that share a long border and a treaty regime. The next scheduled marker is the Danstar sailing in November, which lawmakers in both countries have already debated.

What Is Not Known

No report reviewed shows a reaction from Milei or Argentina’s government to Poduje’s remark. Alvarado declined to say whether Argentina called or complained.

It is not known whether Poduje was reprimanded in private. His post on X was read through the outlets that quote it, and the original post was not opened.

No report says whether Milei and Kast have spoken since Friday or whether a meeting is planned. Poduje’s remark was about public works, and no report links it directly to the Strait dispute.
