For those discovering Madrugada Association for the first time, we are a registered Portuguese Private Institution of Social Solidarity (IPSS - Instituição Particular de Solidariedade Social), providing free of charge, end-of-life support in people's homes across the Algarve.
Our nurses help manage symptoms, guide and reassure families, work alongside other healthcare professionals and provide essential care and equipment, including hospital beds, when it is needed by our patients.
Madrugada (pronounced ‘mah-droo-GAH-duh’) means ‘the hours before dawn’. For us, the name evokes those quiet, uncertain moments when a reassuring presence can mean everything. Our professional nursing team does just that, with compassion and empathy to support the patient at end of life. To date, Madrugada has supported some 467 patients at end-of-life.
Covering the cost of this vital community service is a challenge, but our charity shops transform donated goods, volunteer time and community generosity into essential income that sustains the Association and keeps our care services available at no cost to the patient or their family.
A dress looking for a new owner. A book ready to be read again. A household item that is too useful to throw away. These may seem like ordinary items, but inside a Madrugada charity shop they become part of something much bigger. The income generated by our shops helps sustain the entire Association. It contributes to the people, premises, vehicles, coordination and infrastructure needed to keep Madrugada going.
There may not be a direct line between one donated shirt and one nursing visit, but every sale strengthens the organisation that makes those visits possible.
Supporting people at a deeply vulnerable time
Madrugada's nurses are welcomed into family homes during some of life's most difficult moments. They assess symptoms, review and administer medication, offer practical guidance and care and work alongside relatives and healthcare professionals to help each person remain as comfortable and secure as possible to the end.
Their work extends far beyond clinical responsibilities.
Sometimes the most valuable thing a nurse can do is sit and listen. It may mean reassuring a family member who is frightened of making a mistake, explaining what could happen next or simply being present when words are difficult to find.
Illness affects more than the patient. It changes daily routines, relationships and the emotional wellbeing of the whole family. A calm conversation, clear guidance or the knowledge that help is available can ease some of the weight that relatives and carers have been carrying alone.
This human presence lies at the heart of Madrugada.
More than second-hand shopping
Our charity shops play an essential role in keeping the Association afloat. They generate income, increase awareness of our services and create welcoming spaces where people can contribute to their community. They also give donated goods a second life.
Good-quality clothing, books and household items get to be reused and appreciated by someone new instead of being discarded. Customers at Madrugada shops will always find something useful to upcycle, repurpose, or to rave about, at truly affordable prices, while their purchase contributes to Madrugada's continuing community work. A simple transaction becomes an act of community participation.
Powered by people
Behind every Madrugada shop is a dedicated team of volunteers. They receive and sort donations, prepare clothing, create displays, assist customers and help with collections. Just as importantly, they bring warmth, humour and personality to our shops. Many customers return not only because of what they may find, but because of the people they meet.
Our volunteers come from many different countries, professions and walks of life. Some give several days each week, while others contribute whenever their circumstances allow. Each person brings something valuable, and every hour makes a difference. If you would like to get involved, please follow the link at the end of the article.
Equally, we are grateful to those who donate and shop with us. A charity shop cannot succeed without good-quality stock and loyal customers. Whether someone gives us a favourite jacket, buys a pre-loved item or recommends Madrugada to a friend, that person is helping to sustain the Association.
A retail network that continues to evolve
Running a network of charity shops requires careful oversight and a willingness to adapt. The Madrugada Management Board is responsible for the Association’s overall direction and resources, balancing the desire to grow our services across the Algarve, with the need to ensure healthy income from each retail unit we operate in order to maintain our current service provision.
We regularly review all our shops to respond to local demand, improve the customer experience and make effective use of our premises, vehicles and volunteer resources. These changes help keep our retail network efficient and able to generate the income Madrugada needs.
Lagoa is one recent example. After a sustained decline left sales 16.5% below their 2023 level, the former mixed homeware and fashion outlet became a dedicated fashion store in July 2026. The success of our relocated Lagos Fashion Store gave the Board and Retail Manager confidence that this model could offer Lagoa a stronger future.
Homeware remains part of our retail activity, with collections and deliveries now centralised in Lagos to provide a more practical and coordinated service.
The success of any new approach must be assessed over time. It also depends on the continued support of our volunteers and customers, whose involvement and positive word of mouth help bring more people through our doors.
Our shops may continue to evolve, but their purpose remains the same: to generate essential income, promote responsible reuse and to connect our communities with Madrugada’s mission.
A new look digital presence for Madrugada
Our retail network is not the only part of Madrugada moving forward.
In October, we will launch our refreshed website, offering a clearer and more accessible way to discover who we are, understand our services and learn how to get involved.
Visitors will be able to find information about our work, charity shops, volunteering, donations, fundraising and the different ways in which Madrugada supports people and families.
The website will provide a fresh window into the Association, but the values behind it remain unchanged: compassion, dignity, community and human connection.
How you can help
There are many ways to become part of Madrugada.
You can donate clean, good-quality items, visit one of our shops, volunteer with our retail team or introduce someone else to the Association. You can also assist through independent fundraising, make a financial contribution or help more people understand the services we provide.
Also, we need clinical-support volunteers throughout the Algarve to help our nursing team deliver and set up essential equipment, particularly hospital beds, in patients’ homes.
Whether you help in one of our shops, become a member, assist with equipment deliveries or contribute in another way, what matters most is reliability, kindness and a willingness to work as part of a team. A regular commitment is valuable, but occasional assistance can also make a meaningful difference.
Every donation gives something useful a new beginning.
Every volunteer strengthens our community.
Every customer helps Madrugada remain available to those who need us.
So, when you support Madrugada, you are doing much more than making a donation or a purchase.
You are helping an entire Association continue its work.
To volunteer, donate or learn more, please contact the Madrugada Support Centre, visit one of our charity shops or from October, explore our refreshed website at www.madrugada-portugal.com . Because You Care, We Can!
