Authorities detained a passenger arriving from Abu Dhabi at Shah Amanat International Airport in Chattogram this morning (18 October) with 566 grams of gold worth an estimated Tk1.204 crore.
A joint operation by the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), National Security Intelligence (NSI) and Customs Intelligence led to the seizure, according to an airport press release.
Md Kamrul Islam, from Donogra in Banshkhali, Chattogram, arrived on US-Bangla Airlines flight BS-350 at around 6:30am.
DGFI officials became suspicious of him during baggage screening at the customs hall. A subsequent search, conducted under the supervision of airport intelligence agencies, uncovered four gold bars weighing 466 grams concealed inside a non-stick pan, a stainless steel vegetable blender and a stainless steel utensil stand.
Officials also recovered a pair of gold bangles weighing 100 grams.
After verifying the quantity, officials handed the seized gold over to airport customs.
Authorities said they are preparing to file a case against the passenger under anti-smuggling laws and hand him over to Patenga Police Station.
Airport authorities said intelligence agencies and customs will maintain heightened surveillance to prevent gold smuggling and foreign currency laundering.
