The ‘troll-y’ reason Mina Kimes felt better about Patriots’ AJ Brown despite drops appeared first on ClutchPoints. Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
New England Patriots fans were anticipating an AJ Brown eruption months before he even joined the team. They had all of training camp to gush over his newfound chemistry with MVP runner-up Drake Maye, leading up to a big Super Bowl rematch versus the Seattle Seahawks on NFL opening night. The star wide receiver hardly played a half with the Pats before suffering a high ankle sprain. Excitement was tempered, but it gradually built back up again.
And then he competed against the New York Jets. Brown totaled three receptions on 10 targets for a meager 27 yards in a 26-19 divisional victory. Most memorably, the three-time Second-Team All-Pro posted two drops, including one that would have been a touchdown. All the hype and waiting, only to see him crash out in his Patriots home debut. Mina Kimes was actually encouraged, however.
“I know this is going to sound troll-y, but I actually felt better about AJ Brown after watching the game, because he’s open the whole game,” the NFL analyst said on ESPN’s “NFL Live.” “I’m not worried about AJ Brown’s hands. That will be fine. I would be worried if AJ Brown wasn’t getting separation or if he looked slow, but he looked completely fine.

“He was winning consistently at the line of scrimmage… He just didn’t catch it for whatever reason, which is not something he has struggled with over the course of his career.”

While some fans may instinctively roll their eyes, Kimes makes a compelling argument for a Brown bounce-back in this Thursday’s road matchup versus the Chicago Bears. The Super Bowl 59 champion owns an acceptable 5.7 percent drop rate across eight years, according to Pro Football Focus, so logic suggests he will be sharper in that area moving forward. Will the man stay healthy, though?
Ankle injuries can linger, and playing twice in a five-day span after missing five weeks of action can be risky. AJ Brown is presently considered questionable after being a limited participant during Tuesday’s practice. If he does suit up in Chicago, fans will closely monitor his explosiveness and hands.
Assuming Mina Kimes is right, though, it seems the Patriots may finally get the impactful playmaker they were yearning for all spring.
