- YouTube is running a limited test in the US, displaying conversational “Ask YouTube” AI previews at the top of desktop search results for open-ended and how-to queries.
- The structured AI cards will provide text advice paired with timestamped key moments from relevant videos, allowing users to ask follow-up questions or skip to standard video results.
- The feature could transform YouTube into an interactive answer engine, though it raises concerns about creator traffic and monetization if viewers no longer need to click through to full videos.
YouTube is experimenting with bringing previews of its conversational “Ask YouTube” feature directly into standard desktop search results, putting AI-generated summaries front and center before users even click on a video result. The move expands on Google’s ongoing push to integrate generative AI across its video platform, following the rollout of Ask YouTube on mobile.
As announced by YouTube, the feature is currently running as a limited test for select signed-in desktop users in the US searching in English. Instead of serving a purely traditional vertical list of video results, YouTube’s search results may now surface a conversational overview at the very top of the page when you search for open-ended, how-to, or skill-based queries, such as “how do I get marks off painted walls?”
