The management of Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike, Ikwo (AE-FUNAI), has denied increasing school fees in the institution.
There were reports among students of the university that the institution had increased the school fees, which is raising concerns and apprehension among the students.
But in a statement signed by the university’s spokesperson, Elom Iyke Ubochi, the university denied increasing the school fees.
“The management of Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike has noted with concern the apprehension among our dear students on social media following the release of the fee schedule for the 2026/2027 academic session.”
“We have listened. We have engaged. It is important to state the facts clearly to avoid misinformation.”
“No increase in school fees (other charges). Contrary to reports being circulated, the university did not increase its school fees. The approved ‘other charges’ remain exactly as they were in the 2025/2026 session.”
“What was newly introduced are three critical, student-centred levies aimed at protecting academic quality, security and student welfare. They are: security levy, accreditation levy and students’ life assurance levy.”
“We are all aware of the security challenges within and around our campus, especially the harassment of students at night.”
“Following the Federal Government’s policy of outsourcing security services in federal institutions, the university must engage and fund licensed private security firms to provide 24-hour professional protection for our students and property. Your safety is non-negotiable.”
“Accreditation is the lifeline of any academic programme. Without regular accreditation by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and relevant professional bodies, no student can graduate and programmes risk being shut down.”
“This exercise is highly capital-intensive, involving logistics, facilities upgrade and peer review. This levy ensures that all our programmes retain full accreditation and our students graduate as and when due with certificates that are globally respected.”
“For the first time, the university is introducing a comprehensive insurance cover for every student. In the unfortunate event of death, accident or permanent disability, this policy will provide immediate support for medical bills, burial expenses and death benefits to affected families. It is a proactive welfare policy that puts the student first.”
“We wish to emphasise that this decision was not unilateral. It was reached after extensive deliberations and consultations with key stakeholders, including the leadership of the Students’ Union Government (SUG).”
“Both management and the SUG made concessions in good faith, placing the overall interest and sustainability of the university above all else.”
“The welfare and best interest of our students remain the topmost priority of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Daniel Nwachukwu, and the university management.”
“We therefore appeal to all our great AE-FUNAI students, known for their refined character and enlightened conduct, to remain calm, be law-abiding and continue with their academic activities peacefully.”
“The doors of management remain open, and engagement with your leadership on this matter is still ongoing,” he said.
