Stuck for things to do this weekend in Latvia? Fear not, you have options. Here are three suggestions to get you started.
Riga International Film Festival
You say you like films, but do you really? If a festival as great as this is happening and yet to fail to go to a single screening, the claim is doubtful. Ditch the formulaic Netflix nonsense for the weekend and find some genuinely original, challenging and European films instead. You still have a couple of days to put your money where your mouth is. We particularly recommend Paweł Pawlikowski's Fatherland.

Anslavs Eglītis exhibition in Sigulda
Anšlavs Eglītis' reputation as a writer and important cultural figure continues to grow, as this small but very nicely curated exhibition at the Devons cultural centre shows 120 years after his birth. While plenty of fun can be had from seeing the photos of Anšlavs standing next to the luminaries of Hollywood during his period as a film critic, it's the chance to see some of his own paintings and notebooks from his earlier years that really fascinates.
The exhibition texts are very well written, too (though only in Latvian). True fans might also consider driving on to the village of Inciems, which played an important part in Eglītis' life and works and where you will find more traces of the great man.

Eat out in Liepāja

Parka Paviljons restaurant, Liepāja
Liepāja Restaurant Week started on October 16 and runs until October 25, so you still have time to take advantage of special seasonal menus created for this event and explore the diversity of the city's restaurants.
"This autumn, restaurants will become stages where taste will play the leading role. The dishes created by chefs will combine seasonality, creativity, form, texture and story, allowing you to experience cooking as part of the cultural life of Liepāja," says publicity.
Pro tip (in every sense): find a restaurant you like, enjoy the meal and leave a very generous tip to ensure excellent service when you return next year for the Liepāja capital of culture programme.
